Draft intrigue

So, now that the AFC East has a new contender with the New York Jets, who acquired Aaron Rodgers on Monday, draft week is officially off and running.

And it’s fair to start with the Jets since this time last year, they aced the draft so convincingly, it has redirected the franchise.

The Jets landed the offensive and defensive rookies of the year in the 2022 draft with Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner, who made first team All-Pro at corner in his debut season.

Of course every team would love to have a Jets-esque talent infusion, but these are the five that could offer the most intrigue come Thursday night.

— Now that Rodgers is settled with a different shade of green, what becomes of Lamar Jackson in his lingering QB soap opera drama with the Ravens?

— How do the playoff teams that pulled off big draft deals use their top-10 picks? Seattle has Denver’s pick at 5 and NFC champ Philly has New Orleans’ selection at 10. Either of those teams could pull the trigger on Texas star running back Bijan Robinson.

— How do the QBs play out and who will deal with Arizona to move up to 3 as the QBs start flying off the board?

— How far will Jalen Carter fall, and which team will be the beneficiary of his all-world talents?

— How high will Hendon Hooker be picked, because it’s looking more and more likely that the former UT QB will be a first-round selection?

Thoughts?

Draft contest

Yep, it’s happening. Visor tip to Penny Lane, of course.

So we will talk draft all week. And we need to plug our annual “Feeling the Draft while drinking a Draught” contest.

And like all contests around these parts, it’s free and we’ll give away a gift card and maybe some TFP swag if we can put our hands on any.

(Side note: If you are looking for free, here’s a link to my “Plays of the Day” email that comes out every Monday-Friday at 5 p.m. Another successful night Monday with the Lakers and the Braves. Good times.)

As for the contest, so, here’s the deal. One point for each correct draft pick of the questions below. Who’s with me?

— First player drafted?

— Which QB is picked first, Anthony Richardson or Will Levis?

— Who do the Falcons pick first?

— How many QBs go in round 1?

— Which team drafts Bijon Robinson?

— Number of SEC players picked in round 1?

Go, and here’s my best guesses for each of the above.

Bryce Young, Richardson, the tackle from Northwestern, 5, Philadelphia and 12.

Enjoy and good luck.

Omar was right

Omar Little was one of the best characters on “The Wire,” which is on the short list of best TV shows ever made.

One of Omar’s many great quotes was the epic, “you come at the king, you best not miss.”

Dillon Brooks is living the Omar all-timer as we speak.

Brooks and the Memphis Grizzlies were undone by LeBron James in a pivotal Game 4 last night. James, who was the target of much of Brooks babbling last week, scored 22 and had 20 rebounds and seven assists. He scored the overtime-forcing basket at the end of regulation and delivered the dagger that iced the Lakers’ win in the extra session.

Los Angeles is up 3-1 over the second-seeded Grizzlies, who are paying a heavy price for poking the bear.

This and that

— Braves played. Braves won. And when that offense scores 11 without Ronald Acuña contributing much and Marcel Ozuña doing his usual bagel-for-4, well, that’s a testament to the depth. And the mediocrity of the Marlins’ pitching staff other than Sandy Whosehishat.

— Former UTC women’s basketball coach Katie Burrows is taking the job at Dade County. Here’s more from Stephen Hargis.

— Speaking of names you know, Hargis also has the skinny on Venus Lacy taking the coaching job at her alma mater Brainerd.

— So Don Lemon is done at CNN and Fox and Tucker Carlson have parted ways. So there’s that.

— And Joe Biden has announced that he will run for re-election.

— Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka are holding out hope that LIV golfers will not be immediately dismissed from Ryder Cup consideration. Here’s more.

Today’s questions

True or false, it’s Tuesday. Morning, Ern.

True or false, Dillon Brooks’ mouth has issued some checks too big for his high tops.

True or false, Marcel Ozuña needs to be released.

True or false, Aaron Rodgers and the Jets make the playoffs.

Answer some T or Fs; ask some T or Fs.

As for today, April 25, let’s review.

Al Pacino is 83 today. Dude has a pretty strong Rushmore, no?

Rushmore of “draft,” and be creative.
