Rodarte Brings Balletcore To Hollywood For Their Fall Collection

Balletcore is the athleisure adjacent trend sweeping TikTok with over six million views on the hashtag alone.

Now, Hollywood’s leading ladies are cementing the aesthetic’s status as the one to rival in the new collection for cult womenswear label Rodarte.

Laura and Kate Mulleavy, the Los Angeles-based sister duo behind the label, have become synonymous with the stylised portraits and masterful vignettes they’ve presented in lieu of a runway for their collections.

In fact, you could argue that their guerilla-tactic Spring/Summer 2020 lookbook pioneered the rise in digital fashion presentations that were prevalent during the pandemic.

For their latest collection, a meticulously curated ensemble of emerging actresses channel the spirit of Anna Karenina—the Russian socialite embroiled with love and lust—and Odette from Swan Lake.

The likes of Mandy Moore, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Iris Apatow, Charli XCX, Kaitlyn Dever, Lara Condor, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Josephine Langford reinterpret ballet tropes—read: tulle gowns, pointe shoes and knitwear—with new zeal, throwing out the archetypes of what a traditional ballet ensemble should be.

The collection is fantastical—combining the subversive and unexpected nature of Rodarte’s designs with the tradition and timeless beauty of the ballet aesthetic.

More so, this collection isn’t a kitschy interpretation of balletcore, it’s genuinely wearable and won’t make you look like you’re playing dress ups.

In true Rodarte form, silhouettes contrast between slim fitting satin slips and voluminous puff sleeved gowns. The colour palette is millennial pink and baby blue, yet splashes of sunburnt orange or bold crimson reminds you that there is more to the pieces than meets the eye.

Despite balletcore only increasing in popularity this year, this trend isn’t new by any means.

Australian designer Zimmermann took cues from ballet for their Spring/Summer 2020 collection entitled ‘The Dancer’.

During Paris Fashion Week, Miu Miu made a case for pointe shoes to be worn as ballet flats with the satin number becoming an industry favourite of the season.

Simone Rocha also paid homage to the Irish folklore that inspired Swan Lake with her ethereal collection at London Fashion Week.

It’s also worth noting the correlation between Julia Fox’s controversial ‘Fox Eye’ and Natalie Portman’s makeup from the 2010 Oscar Award winning film Black Swan.

The only thing we need to complement the collection? A night at the ballet of course.
