No Return, 10.15pm, RTÉ One

Danny Brocklehurst’s drama, starring Sheridan Smith and Louis Ashbourne Serkis, got mixed reviews when it was broadcast in the UK. But by all accounts, Smith is superb.

This week the Quinns excitedly prepare for the annual trip to Barry’s amusement park in the holiday town of Portrush.

Surely an unfeasible amount of sandwiches and a massive surfboard is all they could need? Well, that and everyone making the train.

Scannal – Annie McCarrick, 7.00pm, RTÉ One

A look at the case of the 27-year-old American Annie McCarrick (below), who disappeared under suspicious circumstances in March 1993.

She went missing after leaving her flat in Dublin and heading for Enniskerry in the foothills of the Wicklow mountains.

The programme hears from retired detective Thomas Rock, who investigated the disappearance, Annie’s friend and colleague Marisa Mackle, and former FBI agent Kenneth Strange, who has helped and advised the McCarrick family.

Life After Life, 9.00pm, BBC Two

The drama – based on the novel by Kate Atkinson, following the thrilling journey of a young woman called Ursula Todd, who dies and is reborn time and time again – continues.

Now 10-years-old, Ursula is traumatised by nightmares of dying and decides to visit a psychiatrist to help with her dark thoughts and disturbing dreams.

Later, a memorable birthday has shocking repercussions, and help comes from an unexpected place.

The King, 10.00pm, Sky Atlantic

As the Italian prison drama starring Inspector Montalbano’s Luca Zingaretti continues, Prosecutor Lombardo is increasingly suspicious.

She doesn’t believe Lackovic committed suicide, she believes he was killed begins to believe there is an occult and illegal system at play inside the prison.

Meanwhile, Zingaretti’s character Bruno Testori summons his team and asks them to behave with greater rigor and severity towards the prisoners and not to collaborate with the prosecutor.

Julia, 9.00pm, Sky Atlantic

Sarah Lancaster and David Hyde Pierce work so well together in this drama inspired by Julia Child’s extraordinary life and her long-running television series, The French Chef, which pioneered the now popular genre of cooking shows.

This week Julia and her TV team face the challenge of reshooting a ruined roll videotape, leaving them to be rather inventive about cuts of meat and baking bread.

Freeze the Fear with Wim Hof, 9.00pm, BBC One

This show reminds me of watching Tarrant on TV, which used to feature clips from Japanese TV’s Endurance that were basically making fun of torture.

This week sees the blue-skinned celebrities strip down to their swimwear and enter an extremely powerful man-made blizzard.

With visibility incredibly low and thousands of litres of ice battering them each minute they’re in there, will they be able to reach the finish line and plant their flag?

Pompeii: Sin City, 10.00pm, Sky Arts

From the acclaimed director Pappi Corsicato, this is a cinematic documentary on one of the world’s most mysterious archaeological places, Pompeii.

Isabella Rossellini accompanies viewers through secrets, masterpieces and stories that range between Myth, Eros and portraits of life.

Noughts + Crosses, 11.10pm, BBC One

The return for a second season of the drama set in a fictional world where black people rule over a white underclass, based on the novel by Malorie Blackman.

Callum and Sephy have found a safe haven in the woods, until one day their peace is disturbed by an unexpected visitor.

Realising their only choice is to leave Albion for good, they plot a return to London to gather up the resources they need.

Meanwhile, Sephy’s disappearance has spurred vigilante attacks and hate crime against Noughts is on the rise.

New to Stream

David Spade: Nothing Personal, Netflix

Hot off the beach from his guest hosting duties on Bachelor In Paradise, David Spade – remember him from Rules of Engagement? – in makes his Netflix comedy special debut with Nothing Personal.

From sharing his disdain for crabs to his unique approach to turning down drugs, David proves that no topic is off limits.

The show was filmed at the Pantages Theater in Minneapolis.
