Hollywood movie ‘Finestkind’ continues filming in the New Bedford area
NEW BEDFORD — After the weekend off, filming for “Finestkind” has resumed in the backyard of a house on Briggs Street.
“We need our weekends,” said producer Gary Foster, while standing at one of the many monitors displaying a scene that included actors Ben Foster (“Hell and High Water”) and Toby Wallace (“The Society”) attending a barbeque.
Actor Ismael Cruz Cordova (“The Undoing”) also appeared in the scene.
Meanwhile, down at the New Bedford pier, Gary Foster said a fishing boat was setting sail for a ten-day fishing trip utilizing the “Deadliest Catch” crew to get footage for the film as well.
“Hopefully we get some really good stuff with them,” he said.

Monday marks day five of the planned 34-day shoot. Foster said they were happy with the first week, especially with the weather. “We got lucky with the weather,” Foster added.
Aside from a possible afternoon shower on Tuesday, the next few days look to be perfect filming weather.
“April showers bring May flowers,” quipped writer and director Brian Hegleland, a New Bedford native and UMass Dartmouth grad. Hegeland is best known for co-scripting the crime drama “L.A. Confidential,” winning an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Hegleland is excited to be back in the city and filming around his old stomping ground, welcoming members of the community to watch closely from the sidelines. “Make them feel like they’re a part of it,” he said.
“It’s good for the community because they’re all so curious,” Foster added.
“Finestkind” follows two brothers from opposite sides of the tracks, who are reunited as adults over one fateful summer. When desperate circumstances force them to strike a deal with a dangerous Boston crime syndicate, a young woman finds herself caught in the middle.
Tim Daily (“Madame Secretary”); Jenna Ortega (“You”) and Lolita Davidovich (“Hollywood Homicide”) also star in the film as well as Oscar-winner Tommy Lee Jones, who has yet to be seen on set.

Seeking more New Bedford locals
Monday’s scene featured several background actors. Kendall Cooper, of Kendall Cooper Casting, was in attendance. She helped cast several of the extras for the movie after putting out a casting call requesting New Bedford locals and fishermen.
“We got a great response and a lot of local commercial fishermen, which is really what we were looking for,” Cooper said.
“it’s been really exciting to have people that are actually local to New Bedford and getting a chance to put them in the movie to help make it more realistic for the locations.”

Cooper, who has been casting background and day player roles for almost eight years, works mainly on the East Coast but has worked on projects in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., too.
Her casting company recently worked on “Hocus Pocus 2.”

“It never gets boring. It’s so fun because like each project is such an individual thing to try to achieve,” she said.
Cooper said they’ve had a few hundred people submit so far but are still looking to fill more roles. Anyone interested in being considered, can submit their information on the company’s official website.
“Submissions will be open throughout filming and casting is ongoing, so if people are interested, they should still submit,” she said, adding that after submitting people should keep an eye out on their email as that is how they will contact them.
“Finestkind” continues filming in the New Bedford area through Wednesday, but will return next week for more.
