Cary Elwes, who plays Mayor Larry Kline on the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, was bitten by a rattlesnake in the yard of his Malibu home.

Elwes, who rose to fame in the role of Westley in the 1987 feature film The Princess Bride, was working in his yard when he was bitten. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors quickly administered antivenom.

The actor posted a photo afterwards on Twitter, thanking the L.A. County Fire Department and the staff at Malibu Urgent Care and UCLA Health.

He joked, “Bitten not by a ROUS but a rattlesnake.” In The Princess Bride, the giant rat-like creatures Westley and Buttercup (a.k.a. the Princess Bride) encounter are called R.O.U.S. (Rodents of Unusual Size). Wesley is bitten on his right arm by a R.O.U.S. in a swamp.

Elwes, whose hand was black and blue from the rattlesnake bite, wrote, “Am recovering well thanks to all these wonderful folks.”

New episodes of the fourth season of Stranger Things debut May 27, 2022 on Netflix.
