‘Morbius’ Actor Talks Deleted Action Scene With Matt Smith
Morbius star Al Madrigal reveals that he had an action sequence with Matt Smith that was deleted.
It’s been a month since Morbius hit theaters, and fans are for the most part unimpressed with the latest entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Much of the criticisms lobbied against the film are related to how some felt it was a project that felt made by committee, and that much of the film’s story was made in a way to set up future sequels and spinoffs. Amongst the numerous criticisms, some praised the performance of Matt Smith, despite the writing for the character himself.
Al Madrigal, who played Albert “Al” Rodriguez, an FBI agent and the partner to Tyrese Gibson’s Simon Stroud, was interviewed by ComicBookMovie.com recently, and he discussed how he shot an action sequence for six days with Matt Smith that was ultimately deleted from Morbius:
“Yeah, quite a few. You saw a complete alternate ending to this entire thing. They made a good point. That scene you saw pictures from was shot during the day and the rationale was, ‘We have a vampire movie. We can’t have the big final fight scene happen during the day.’ At some point, me and Tyrese fought Matt Smith. I shot for six days and none of that was shown.”
It sure sounds like Morbius experienced quite a bit of post-production changes. After all, the film was originally set to hit theaters in 2020, but was understandably delayed multiple times given the global pandemic. When one watches the original teaser trailers for the film, it is pretty fascinating to see that some sequences featured in the promotional material are absent from the official film itself, including more footage involving Matt Smith and Michael Keaton among others.
Here is the synopsis for Morbius:
One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed and transforms this healer into a hunter.
Directed by Daniel Espinosa from a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Morbius stars Jared Leto, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach produced the project with Lucas Foster, with Palak Patel overseeing it for Sony.
