MARQUETTE — Gloria J Moyle, 93, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Friday April 29, 2022, at Norlite Nursing Center, Marquette, where she had been a resident for the past month.

Gloria was born at home in Dodgeville on February 18, 1929, daughter of Hilda (Tammela) and Emil Ranta.

She attended Houghton High School until her junior year and graduated from Sault Ste Marie High School class of 1947. Gloria worked as a Michigan Bell long-distance operator in Detroit before marrying Robert “Bob” Moyle and returning to the Upper Peninsula where they lived and raised a family of six in Houghton.

Gloria is remembered by many for her twenty-five years of friendly, helpful customer service at JC Penney in Houghton before retiring in 1989. She had a wonderful group of co-workers who became dear friends to her.

In 1995, Gloria moved to Hancock where she lived under the watchful eye of her son, Bink spending the next twenty-five years enjoying life on the waters of the “Canal”.

In 2019, she moved to Marquette where she was cared for during her final years by her daughter Jacky. Special thanks from us all for their care of “Granny” and hosting countless family gatherings.

Gloria enjoyed scenic drives around the Keweenaw Peninsula, attending church and live performances with friends, birdwatching, daily sunsets, summer pontoon rides, spoiling every dog she encountered, and eating good chocolate. She enjoyed travels to Alaska, Hawaii, California and Florida, and a very special trip with her sister Ellen to Finland where she met many relatives and visited where her parents were raised before they came to America. She was a voracious reader and crossword puzzle enthusiast with an impressive vocabulary and kept up on current events and celebrity gossip for as long as her eyesight allowed.

Gloria was the heartbeat of her family. She fostered special relationships with relatives across multiple generations, all of whom she loved very deeply. She will be dearly missed by many and we are thankful for all the years we were able to spend with her. We will always feel her presence in our hearts. She had a magnetic personality, sharp wit and a smile that could light up a room. She never forgot a birthday, holiday, graduation or anniversary. Her warmth, generosity and gracious spirit made all who knew her feel blessed by her love.

Gloria is survived by her children, Kenneth “Bink” (Lisa) Moyle of Hancock, Susan (Dan) Casey of Ubly, Jacalyn DeGroot of Marquette, Roger (Becky) Moyle of Baraga; grandchildren, Lori Murphy and Nicole Ubinger of Hancock, Sara Casey and Tom Casey of Grand Rapids, Matt DeGroot of Marquette, Mark DeGroot of Butler, PA, Amanda (Cory) Hoffman of Calumet, Holly (Brad) Hibbard, Lake Angelus; 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Alan Moyle of Jacksonville, FL, and many dear nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hilda and Emil Ranta; husband Bob Moyle; sons, Richard and Thomas Moyle; grandson, Josh Moyle whom she held close to her heart; sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Alexander Nick, and son-in-law James DeGroot.

Honoring Gloria’s wishes no public service will be held. In her memory donations may be made to Copper Country Humane Society, 501 Nara Park Rd, Houghton, MI 49931.
