Kim Kardashian Explains Why She Thinks ‘KUWTK’ Became So Popular
As her star continues to rise, with one of her most recent accomplishments the release of a new reality series, The Kardashians, Kim Kardashian is taking some time to look back on her beginnings.
Speaking to Sports Illustrated as a cover model for the 2022 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, Kardashian revealed why her family first agreed to star in Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and why she thinks it was (and still is) so popular.

Initially, Kardashian saw the show as a promotional opportunity for their store, DASH, which was founded in 2006 in California. The store later expanded to have two more locations, in New York City and Miami Beach, but after 11 years, all locations closed as of 2018. Keeping Up With the Kardashians premiered in 2007, at the start of DASH.
“I remember when we got the show offer, I said to my sisters, ‘This would be the best marketing for the store,’ and we loved the store,” she said. “Kourtney didn’t really want to do it, Khloe was like, ‘Whatever.’ I absolutely wanted to do it.” There was no guarantee that the TV show would be a success, and according to Kardashian, it was filler: “They needed a show really quickly, we filled in, and we never left.”
As for why exactly Keeping Up With the Kardashians captured the public’s attention, Kardashian believes that it’s due to her family being authentic and honest.

She explained, “We did it our way, and we stuck with it until people started to look at it a little bit differently. And we shared things that were like, culturally educational, whether it’s like, anything from, you know, my stepdad’s transition, to things that people probably wouldn’t have ever written if it was a sitcom or a scripted show because it was so unbelievable that this stuff would happen, but it actually happened in our family.”
Because of the show’s instant success, the family has achieved wealth, influence and plenty of fame—but Kardashian believes that the fact that her family did it together is what kept them grounded, saying, “It was just all happening to all of us, but at the same exact time, and the same exact things, so I feel really blessed that we had that support system within each other.”
