Longest Cannes Standing Ovations, Applause Ever
The standing ovation for Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” clocked in at 12 minutes, but how does that stack up to other past Cannes premieres?

Cannes
Our favorite Cannes pastime? Applauding. And we’re not just talking about a polite applause, but a roaring, whole short film’s worth of standing up and cheering at world premieres.
Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” recently made headlines at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival for a 12-minute standing ovation — despite initial reports that it was only 10 minutes (you really have to count every clap). But for industry standards, that’s literally twice as much enthusiasm for the epic musical blockbuster biopic than George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” which yearned for an ovation longer than its six minutes worth. Applause for David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” similarly clocked in at under seven minutes.
Yes, Cannes standing O’s are a baffling phenomenon. And don’t even get us started on the double standards of walkouts. But it’s not enough to just say there was a standing ovation at a Cannes premiere — we need the minute by minute breakdown.
Below, see the films from Cannes history that surprisingly received the highest amount of applause. Sorry “Good Time” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” but we’re only counting films that break the double digit mark. Now, we’re already getting our timers set for next year….
