JCPRD weekly program highlights: June 12-18
Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.
Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of June 12-18:
June 4 – Okun Fieldhouse Mural Project: “My Mill Creek” Travelling Mural (All Ages)
- Okun Fieldhouse at the Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr, Shawnee, 9 to 10:30 a.m., FREE – (1 of 2) The first community engagement opportunity will be a companion travelling mural created by the community and for the community. This two-part public workshop will occur on June 4 and June 25 and create an educational opportunity for participants to research, design and create a unique, collaborative mural alongside the accomplished artist team ITRAicons. The painting of the mural, a team effort between community members and ITRAicons, will occur over the month of July. All ages welcome! Advanced registration is required and can be completed online.
June 12 – Family Fun: Shooting Sports Family Fun Time (Ages 8 & Older)
- TimberRidge Adventure Center, 12300 S. Homestead Lane, Olathe, 2 to 4 p.m., $12 per person, $13 nonresidents – Archery and BB guns will be offered at their respective ranges from 2-4 pm. Participants (including adults) must pre-register for this event online. No drop-ins accepted, and may come and go or stay for the entire event. Families will rotate through the activities at their own pace. In case of inclement weather, program may be cancelled. Activity number 21576.
June 13-17 – Discovery: Challenge Island© Slime Squad Camp (Ages 6-12)
- Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, Monday through Friday, 1 to 4 p.m., $205 per person, $226 nonresidents – Our original bestselling slime experience takes kids into a new slime-filled world every day: From alien ooze to ghostly goo to monster muck to lava, too. No matter how you squish, squeeze or stretch it, this camp promises to be a blockbuster hit! Activity number 22127.
June 14 – Gardening: Virtual Container Gardening (Ages 18 & Older)
- Virtual Program, 2 to 3 p.m., FREE – What is that? How do I grow this? What should I put in my garden? What type of garden do I like? So many questions and no one to ask until now. Join the K-State Extension Office and discuss your gardening questions with a master gardener. Activity number 21744.
June 15 – Early Learning: Silly Sensory Walks (Ages 1-4 with an Adult)
- Meadowbrook Park – Shelter #1, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., $3 per person, $4 nonresidents – Explore the park with a group and find fun and tactile ways to interact along the way! Limit of two children per adult. Activity number 21930.
June 15 – Social Outing: Discover Downtown-Ottawa (Ages 50 Plus)
- Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., $32 per person, $34 nonresidents – Travel to Ottawa, Kan., and enjoy the day discovering the lively downtown area. Visit the Old Depot Museum and hear about the importance of trains to the development of small towns, including Ottawa. After lunch at Luigi’s, enjoy shopping the four-block Main Street, before heading back. Lunch costs on your own. Activity number 21610. If this trip is full, please consider putting your name on the waitlist, as a second bus might be scheduled.
June 16 – Family Fun: Show your Pride Family Fun (All Ages)
- Meadowbrook Park – Grand Pavilion, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 6 to 8 p.m., $12 per person, $13 nonresidents, 20% discount for three or more participants – Show your love and support by celebrating Pride month at this family-friendly event. All are welcome to enjoy games, a hot dog dinner, fun art projects and more! Show up wearing your most colorful outfit and you just might win a prize for our best dressed costume contest! June 16 – Museum: Behind-the-Scenes Johnson County Museum Tour (All Ages)
- Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., $11 adults, $10 seniors (60+), $9 children, museum members receive a 20% discount – Interact with museum staff as you learn why we collect, how we collect and the importance to our local community. Our collection features over 19,300 3D objects and over one million images. Activity number 21619. To claim discount, members must call 913-831-3359. June 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 24 & 25 – Disney’s “Descendants – The Musical” Rated PG
- Theatre in the Park, 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee (Note that the Renner Road Bridge over I-435 is not usable this summer), 8:30 pm, Tickets are $10 (plus tax) for general admission, $6 (plus tax) for youth (Ages 4-10) Children 3 & under are FREE (but require a ticket) – Based on the popular Disney Channel Original Movies, Disney’s “Descendants: The Musical” is a brand-new musical comedy featuring the beloved characters and hit songs from the films! It is present-day, and in the kingdom of Auradon, all of Disney’s beloved heroes and royalty are living happily ever after, safe from the terrifying villains and troublesome sidekicks they have banished to the magic-free Isle of the Lost. That is until Ben, the benevolent teenage son of Belle and King Adam (The Beast), offers a chance of redemption for the troublemaking offspring of the evilest villains. Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos – the children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella De Vil and Jafar – are welcomed to Auradon Prep to attend school with the children of their parents’ sworn enemies. Now entering a completely foreign world and way of life, the four Villain Kids have a difficult choice to make: Should they follow in their parents’ wicked footsteps or learn to be good? June 18 – Great American Campout Presented by Core Equipment (Ages 4 & Older)
- Open field just south of the Theater in the Park, Shawnee Mission Park, 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa (Note that the Renner Road Bridge over I-435 is not usable this summer), 2 p.m. Saturday until 10 a.m. Sunday, $30 Family up to 4 participants, $10 individuals, Children 3 and Under are free – Step away from the stresses of daily life and camp with us under the stars in Shawnee Mission Park. Fee includes campsite, evening smores, bagel, juice and / or coffee the following morning. One low price allows you to camp with your entire family, hassle free! Campers will need to bring their own camping gear and all other food and beverages (kid friendly, please). Join us for some family fun! Participants will receive 50% off their admission to the beach and the Theatre in the Park’s Production of Disney’s “Descendants – The Musical.” Activity number 22141.
June 18 – Fishing: Overnight Saturdays after 11 pm (All Ages)
- Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa, 11 p.m. – 5 a.m., permit fees vary – After 11 p.m., the park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park and Recreation District fishing permit, trout permit if fishing for trout and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable.
