Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney watched on as Wrexham lost their remarkable National League play-off semi-final to Grimsby 5-4 after extra-time.

Hollywood actors Reynolds and McElhenney, who own the team from the fifth tier of English football, will not have a positive end to the campaign — which is being filmed for a series on Disney+. They were also in attendance last week when their side lost the FA Trophy final at Wembley.

It seemed like the day had got off to a positive side for Wrexham, a team based in Wales who compete in the English football pyramid. Paul Mullin scored a penalty after 13 minutes.

However, the game then took its first turn. John McAtee struck for Grimsby from outside the area to level the game. Luke Waterfall scored just after the break to put Grimsby ahead. Wrexham then equalised through Ben Tozer after 63 minutes before Mullin struck again on 65 minutes to put the hosts in front.

Ryan Taylor dragged Grimsby level again, though, after 72 minutes, before Emmanuel Dieseruvwe headed home to put Grimsby 4-3 up. Jordan Davies, though, bagged in the 80th minute to level the game and send it to extra-time.

The 30 minutes of extra-time were uneventful until the 119th minute, when Waterfall, formerly of Wrexham, nodded the ball home to win the game in dramatic circumstances for Grimsby.

Grimsby now advance to the play-off final, where they will face the winner of Solihull Moors and Chesterfield. The victor in that game will be promoted to League Two — the fourth tier in England.
