Award-winning actor Kevin Spacey has been released on bail at Westminster Magistrates’ Court over four counts of sexual assault against three men. He has also been accused of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent

Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey has been released on bail over sexual assault charges as he made his first court appearance grinning on Thursday morning.

Spacey, 62, arrived at Westminster Magistrates’ Court this morning dressed in a blue suit and black-rimmed glasses.

Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard Spacey is charged with sexual assault on a man and causing him to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent in August 2008, two counts of sexual assault on a man in March 2005, and sexual assault on a man in April 2013.

He was not asked to enter pleas.

The court set a date for Spacey’s next appearance at Southwark Crown Court on July 14. He was granted unconditional bail.

The Oscar winner has been charged with two counts of sexual assault on a man, who is now in his 40s, in March 2005 in London; sexual assault on a man who is now in his 30s, in August 2008 in London and a separate count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent on the same man.

He has also been charged with sexual assault on a man, now in his 30s, in April 2013 in Gloucestershire.

The Crown Prosecution Service authorised charges against him last month, but Spacey could only be charged once he had travelled to the UK.

Following the CPS announcement, Spacey said in a statement released to Good Morning America: “While I am disappointed with their decision to move forward, I will voluntarily appear in the UK as soon as can be arranged and defend myself against these charges, which I am confident will prove my innocence.”

Spacey has won two Oscars and is known for his roles in The Usual Suspects, American Beauty and Netflix political drama House of Cards.

He was also artistic director of The Old Vic theatre in London.
