One of the most talked-about TV sagas in 2010 was the messy split between Conan O’Brien and NBC. The late night comedian had his “Tonight Show” time slot revoked after NBC decided to give Jay Leno his old show back that January, resulting in Conan parting ways with the network in lieu of returning to his old 12:30 a.m. showtime. Fortunately, the comedian didn’t stay away from the small screen for too long. He moved his schtick to TBS, premiering his new late-night show, “Conan,” that November.

“Jon and Kate Plus Eight” stars Jon and Kate Gosselin were among the first famous reality television stars: Their show debuted in 2007 and chronicled the raising of their twins and sextuplets. But two years into their successful show, their relationship unraveled as cameras rolled. Though the split wasn’t necessarily shocking (the two often bickered on screen), the messiness of the aftermath sure was! Both Jon and Kate were rumored to have been unfaithful as they started the divorce process (which both denied), but the reality family’s split was already tabloid fodder and later in the decade made headlines again and again because of claims that Kate was too strict with or even abusive toward her kids (she’s also denied this). The network seemed to side with Kate after the split — the show was renamed “Kate Plus 8” in June 2010 and reconceived to focus on Kate as a divorced mom raising the kids. It continued to run off and on until 2017. Toward the end of the decade, Jon gained custody of two of their sextuplets, Collin and Hannah.

Ricky Martin shocked many fans in March 2010 when he publicly revealed his sexual identity. The singer took to his website to share the news, writing: “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.” Though there had been speculation about his sexual identity over his lengthy career — including a very public question in 2000 from Barbara Walters about whether or not he was gay — Ricky had never openly discussed his private life, instead dodging questions and even previously flaunting a relationship with Mexican TV host Rebecca de Alba for more than 12 years. It wasn’t until after welcoming twin boys via surrogate in 2008 that he decided to come out of the closet. He later told Oprah Winfrey that same year that he thought he might be bisexual and announced he was in a committed relationship with a man, Carlos Gonzalez Abella. The two parted ways in 2014, and now Ricky is married to Jwan Yosef. He and the artist welcomed a daughter, Lucia Martin-Yosef, in 2018, and in 2019 revealed that they’re expecting another child via surrogate.

Lindsay Lohan headed to jail — not once but twice — in 2010. The troubled former child star had a history of run-ins with the law stemming from two drunk driving arrests in 2007, but things really caught up to her in 2010. That June, a judge issued an arrest warrant after she violated a court order and drank alcohol while wearing a SCRAM alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet. Though she posted bail for that offense, a month later, she was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in rehab after violating her probation. She was handcuffed and taken straight to jail that day, but only ended up serving two weeks behind bars. She headed straight to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center from prison to start rehab, where she stayed for only 23 days. She subsequently failed a drug test just a month later in September, had her probation revoked and was sent back to jail that same day. Fortunately for Lindsay, that stint was even shorter — she was released that same night after the decision was overturned and she was granted bail. Lindsay headed back to rehab, this time at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California, where she remained until January 2011 under court order.

A dress hadn’t raised such a commotion since Jennifer Lopez’s infamous green Versace Grammys gown… until Lady Gaga accepted her video of the year trophy for “Bad Romance” at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards wearing a gown made entirely of raw meat, which made waves and angered animal-rights groups. Gaga later told Ellen DeGeneres that while the dress, which was designed by Franc Fernandez, had many interpretations, for her it meant “if we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights pretty soon, we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones.”

A royal wedding! On April 29, 2011, the world was treated to the most decadent wedding of the decade when Prince William and Kate Middleton wed in Westminster Abbey. Royal watchers waited with baited breath to see what the future Duchess of Cambridge would wear down the aisle — and were delighted by her exquisite Sarah Burton-designed Alexander McQueen gown, which came complete with a nine-foot train. And everyone was equally delighted when the bride’s sister, Pippa Middleton, nearly upstaged the bride in her well-fitted white bridesmaid dress. Other highlights from the headline-making festivities included a sweet kiss by the newlyweds on the balcony of Buckingham Palace and the pair’s escape in a decorated vintage car announcing they were “just wed.”

A girl joins the Beckham brood! In July 2011, David Beckham and Victoria Beckham welcomed their fourth child — and first girl! — to the family. They didn’t disappoint with her much anticipated name, dubbing their darling daughter Harper Seven.

It was a match made in Hollywood heaven in 2011 when Leonardo DiCaprio departed from his usual roster of models and dated a fellow actor — “Gossip Girl” star Blake Lively. The duo were first spotted on a yacht together in Cannes that May, with Leo fresh off a split from his latest supermodel love, Bar Refaeli. They were then seen spending time together in Venice, Italy, riding bikes together in New York City, visiting Australia and even spending a day at Disneyland, strengthening the rumors she might be different… but this superstar pairing was short-lived. The two were over after just five months, with Blake moving on to future hubby Ryan Reynolds and Leo moving on with more models including Victoria’s Secret stunners Erin Heatherton and Toni Garrn before closing out the decade in a romance with model-actress Camila Morrone.

Sad news emerged in July 2011 when powerhouse British singer Amy Winehouse died in her London apartment from alcohol poisoning. The coroner determined that the talented 27-year-old star, a longtime addict, had a blood-alcohol level that was five times the legal limit.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has a love child with his housekeeper? In May 2011, the world learned that not only were Arnold and wife Maria Shriver splitting up, but that the movie star had fathered a child with Mildred Baena, a former housekeeper at the Schwarzeneggers’ home. And if that bombshell wasn’t enough, it came out that Mildred gave birth to her son with Arnold, Joseph Baena, back in 1997 just five days after Maria and Arnold welcomed their fourth child together, Christopher Schwarzenegger. By the end of the decade, Arnold had forged a relationship with his illegitimate son, who graduated from Pepperdine University in 2019.

2011 saw a real royal wedding and a wedding of reality royalty that would go down in infamy! Kim Kardashian wed NBA player Kris Humphries in August that year. The lavish ceremony was filmed for a special edition of the family’s reality show, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” entitled “Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event.” And while many didn’t have faith in the couple’s longevity (they dated for just six months before Kris popped the question then tied the knot 90 days later), no one expected it to end so quickly. Just 72 days after they wed, Kim filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.” In an interesting twist, despite having a prenup, the divorce was so contentious and drawn-out — Kris initially wanted an annulment — that it ended up lasting seven times longer than their marriage did. It wasn’t finalized until April 2013.

It was, perhaps, the coolest pregnancy reveal of all time: Beyonce announced she and husband JAY-Z were expecting while she was performing her song “Love On Top” during the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. The superstar unzipped her jacket and rubbed her burgeoning baby bump at the end of the tune to wordlessly share the big news. Daughter Blue Ivy Carter arrived in January 2012 (after months of false speculation that Bey was, for some bizarre reason, faking her pregnancy and baby bump).

Goodbye, Harry Potter! 2011 marked the end of an era as the eighth and final film in the beloved book-to-movie franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2,” hit theaters that July. The movie series had started 10 years prior with “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” and made household names out of stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” was the highest grossing film in the franchise, earning more than $1 billion at the box office.

It was the end of the road for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in 2012. After five years of marriage, the famous couple parted ways that June. Throughout their relationship, which started in 2005 when the duo met regarding a possible role in “Mission: Impossible 3” for Katie, everything was over the top. They took their romance public in Rome that same month, and a month after that, Tom’s infamous couch jumping on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” shocked fans. Less than eight weeks after their first meeting, Tom popped the question (at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, of course) and Katie — who’d started converting to Scientology for him — said yes. They wed seven months after welcoming daughter Suri Cruise in 2006. Tom weathered several public controversies throughout their marriage, mostly tied to his staunch defense of Scientology, which was largely to blame for their split. Katie reportedly hired three different law firms and made calls about the divorce on burner phones to prevent Tom from finding out ahead of time. Her efforts worked: The couple reached a settlement 11 days after Katie filed for divorce and the actress was granted primary custody of Suri. The divorce agreement reportedly stipulated that Tom could see Suri up to 10 days a month, but multiple outlets have reported that Tom soon chose not to, allegedly because Katie and Suri are not Scientologists. He hasn’t been publicly seen with his daughter since September 2013.

Korean pop sensation PSY blessed (or is it cursed?) our ears with the viral sensation “Gangnam Style” in 2012. The song became a massive success in America thanks to… T-Pain? Yep, the rapper was one of the first celebrities to tweet out the video shortly after its release that July, helping spread the PSY pandemic. Britney Spears followed suit a month later, tweeting the video and adding that she wanted to learn the choreography, and the earworm was unavoidable for the rest of the year. The “Gangnam Style” music video became the most viewed YouTube video in history when it topped a billion views in November 2012.

2012 marked a devastating turn for diehard fans of the “Twilight” franchise. Just months before the final film was released, photos surfaced of Kristen Stewart cheating on co-star and off-screen beau Robert Pattinson with her “Snow White and the Huntsman” director, Rupert Sanders (Rupert was married to model Liberty Ross at the time). Us Weekly released the shocking photos of Kristen and Rupert getting steamy in a car in Los Angeles, resulting in an equally surprising public statement from the notoriously private Kristen. “I’m deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I’ve caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I’m so sorry,” Kristen stated in an out-of-character public apology. The stars, who met at their “Twilight” audition, started dating in 2009 to the delight of fans of the book series-turned-film franchise. Though in the direct aftermath of the cheating scandal, Robert headed to his “Water for Elephants” co-star Reese Witherspoon‘s Ojai, California, ranch to hide out, he eventually came around and forgave Kristen. The two got back together in September and by November, they were walking the red carpet together at the premiere of the final “Twilight” installment, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part Two.” Despite their temporary reunion, the couple called it quits the following May.

At the end of the previous decade, the world learned about Chris Brown‘s abusive behavior toward then-girlfriend Rihanna: The morning of the 2009 Grammys, news broke revealing that the R&B star had beat her up in his rented Lamborghini following a pre-Grammys party. Months later, Chris pleaded guilty to one count of assault with the intent of doing great bodily injury. But the drama spilled over into the next decade as Chris was sentenced to five years of probation, a year of domestic violence counseling and six months of community service; a judge also retained a five-year restraining order to keep Chris away from RiRi, though she successfully petitioned to end it in 2011. Chris and Rihanna weren’t done making headlines yet, however: They reconciled, with Rihanna confirming they were back together in early 2013 — they even attended the 2013 Grammys together (seen here). But just a few months later, it was over again.

One star we never thought we’d see arrested? Reese Witherspoon — who got into trouble with the law in April 2013. Reese was arrested in Atlanta after her talent-agent husband, Jim Toth, was pulled over for drunk driving. Reese, it turns out, tried to intervene and found herself headed to jail with a disorderly conduct charge. The movie star infamously informed the police officer that he would “be on [the] national news” and spouted “do you know my name?” When the officer didn’t recognize her, she added, “You’re about to find out who I am.” Both Reese and her husband were booked and bailed out the following morning.

A little prince! Prince William and Duchess Kate welcomed their first child in July 2013. The newest royal heir weighed in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces. They named him George Alexander Louis after the queen’s father, King George VI. His middle names also carried significance — Alexander was selected as a tribute to the queen, whose middle name is Alexandra, and Louis is one of Prince William‘s middle names. When Prince George grows up and eventually takes the throne, he will be the country’s seventh King George.

Prison time for a “Real Housewife” star? Yep. In 2013, we learned that “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Teresa Giudice, a cast member since the show’s 2009 debut, was being charged with hiding assets and income in a bankruptcy case, conspiring to defraud lenders and illegally obtaining mortgages and loans alongside her husband, Joe Giudice. Teresa and Joe would go on to plead guilty and be sentenced to prison time — Teresa started her federal sentence in January 2015 and was released that December, while Joe was behind bars from March 2016 to March 2019. But upon his release, he headed straight to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center to await deportation to his native Italy after filing an appeal. In the fall of 2019, Joe’s request to await the court’s decision in Italy instead of ICE lockup was granted amid much uncertainty concerning the future of his and Teresa’s marriage.

After spending 2012 in hot water thanks to events ranging from a DUI and multiple car accidents to bizarre public spectacles (like wearing lingerie during a spin class and locking herself in the bathroom of a cupcake shop), Amanda Bynes finally faced the music in 2013. She spent the first half of the year tweeting erratically and making headlines for her strange behavior, but in May 2013, she found herself arrested after she allegedly threw a glass bong out of her apartment window in New York City (she claimed it was a vase). Two months later in July, she was put on a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold after she started a fire in a stranger’s driveway in Thousand Oaks, California. That hold was extended in August, and her parents were put in charge of a temporary conservatorship. She transferred to a Malibu rehab center in September, and things seemed to be looking up for the star by December when she enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. She’d spend the next year in and out of trouble thanks to another DUI charge, theft accusations and more. She eventually turned things around and resumed classes at the school in 2015.

Jennifer Lawrence was already America’s resident sweetheart, but she proved herself even more endearingly real with an embarrassing moment at the 2013 Academy Awards. The star headed to the podium to accept her Oscar for best actress for her work in “Silver Linings Playbook” and ended up falling as she walked up the stairs, making for an unforgettable moment during the ceremony. When the audience got on their feet to cheer her win, J.Law made light of her tumble, quipping, “You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell. That’s really embarrassing.” After the show, she blamed the clumsy moment on her intricate Dior dress, sharing, “Look at my dress. I tried to walk up stairs in this dress. That’s what happened. I think I just stepped on the fabric and they waxed the stairs.”

Paul Walker tragically passed away at 40 in November 2013 in a fiery car crash near Los Angeles. Paul’s friend Roger Rodas was behind the wheel and also died when the Porsche they were in hit a pole and exploded while traveling at speeds over 100 miles per hour when they took it out for a spin during a daytime charity event. The “Fast & Furious” franchise star left behind teenage daughter Meadow, girlfriend Jasmine Pilchard-Gosnell and parents Cheryl and Paul.

The MTV Video Music Awards have blessed us with many iconic pop culture moments, and the 2013 telecast was no exception. That year, it was a performance by Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke that had tongues wagging by the watercooler the day after, as Miley blended her hit song “We Can’t Stop” with Robin’s “Blurred Lines” in a controversial performance that included a scantily clad Miley and a foam finger. It was then that Miley turned the page and entered a new, much more grown-up era of her career, shocking fans who were still accustomed to seeing her as the squeaky-clean star of Disney’s “Hannah Montana.” It was also during this performance that “twerking” became part of the vernacular. Of the scandalous appearance, Miley told Howard Stern in 2017 that it was one of the best things to ever happen to her, noting, “that’s when I realized my power.”

A reality star is born! Kim Kardashian and Kanye West welcomed their first child together, daughter North West, in June 2013 — a month after Kim inspired headlines (and memes!) with a very pregnant appearance on the red carpet at that year’s Met Gala. After starting their family, Kim and Kanye decided to take the next step in their relationship: Kanye popped the question on Kim’s 33rd birthday at AT&T Park in San Francisco as the Chicago Symphony performed.

The reality competition series “The Biggest Loser” and the word “scandal” weren’t exactly synonymous… until 2013! That year during the show’s 14th season, trainer Jillian Michaels was discovered to be breaking the rules by giving caffeine supplements to her team members to help them lose extra weight. Once it came out, instead of Jillian suffering any repercussions, it was her team that was hurt — the show penalized them four pounds for Jillian’s decision. The move came after the personal trainer had previously left the show twice — she’d just returned for that season after departing in 2011. She eventually left for good after Season 15, when she was disturbed by the shocking weight loss accomplished by that season’s winner, Rachel Frederickson.

After nine years as a couple, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie finally made it official in August 2014. The couple, who were the proud parents of six children at that point, involved their kids in their intimate wedding ceremony — with eldest son Maddox giving Angelina away, sons Pax and Knox serving as ring bearers, and daughters Zahara, Shiloh and Vivienne tossing flowers down the aisle. Only 22 of the couple’s closest family members were there as they shared their handwritten vows (Angelina’s dad, Jon Voight, was not in attendance). Versace’s master tailor, Luigi Massi, designed Angelina’s gorgeous silk-satin wedding gown, which included a veil decorated with artwork from the children.

Though Kendra Wilkinson‘s reality show “Kendra On Top” wasn’t a massive ratings juggernaut, a cheating scandal that affected her marriage certainly made massive headlines. News broke in 2014 revealing that Kendra’s former NFL player husband, Hank Baskett, had allegedly fooled around with a transgender model — all while Kendra was eight months pregnant with their second child. The story shocked fans of the show, as Hank had been portrayed as a loving, doting husband. Kendra gave birth to their second child, daughter Alijah, in May 2014, with news of the infidelity breaking less than two months later. Cameras caught everything — which resulted in many accusing the couple of faking the drama — but Kendra told E! News that September that while she wished it weren’t true, it unfortunately was, adding, “It is the most insulting thing out of all this, that people think that this is fake. I would never do this to myself. You know, I would never degrade myself like that.” Despite dominating entertainment news with the scandal, the couple decided to head to therapy and try to salvage their marriage. They even did a stint on “Marriage Boot Camp: Family Edition” the following year, but their efforts ultimately were all in vain. They officially split in 2018 after nearly nine years of marriage.

Robin Williams’ death shocked the world in August 2014. The beloved star committed suicide at 63 at his home in Tiburon, California. He’d been battling depression and paranoia and had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s — though an autopsy later revealed he actually had Lewy body dementia, a devastating brain disease. Robin left behind third wife Susan, daughter Zelda and sons Zachary and Cody.

Two words: elevator fight. In May 2014, following the prestigious Met Gala , Beyonce‘s younger sister, Solange Knowles, got into an altercation with Bey’s husband, JAY-Z in an elevator at the Standard Hotel in New York City. In the wake of the surveillance footage being leaked, rumors swirled speculating that Jay’s infidelity had caused the spat. Though Beyonce would later allude to the elevator fight in the remix of her song “Flawless” with Nicki Minaj — singing “Sometimes s— go down when there’s a billion dollars on an elevator” — we’ll never know exactly what sparked that violent event. Bey and Jay both later confirmed via 2016 and 2017 albums that he had indeed been unfaithful, but that they’d worked through it.

Though there had been previous allegations of his sexual misconduct, Bill Cosby truly started facing the music in 2014. After comedian Hannibal Buress made a joke about the comedian raping women, more alleged victims came forward (he’d previously faced lawsuits in the mid-aughts). Many of these women claimed the comedy star had drugged and assaulted or raped them. Model Janice Dickinson, for example, claimed she was drugged and raped in 1982 and model Beverly Johnson wrote an essay for Vanity Fair chronicling the time she said Bill drugged her. More than 50 women would eventually speak out against the once beloved star. Bill’s attorneys continuously tried to file defamation lawsuits against accusers. Hollywood’s answer to a royal wedding came in September 2014 when longtime bachelor George Clooney wed British human rights attorney Amal Alamuddin. There were plenty of fellow superstars in attendance at the Venice, Italy, ceremony including Matt Damon, Bono, Anna Wintour, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt and Cindy Crawford, though the wedding was relatively intimate at around 100 guests.

Justin Bieber got arrested for the first time in January 2014 at age 19. And the pop star made up for lost time, racking up a hefty list of charges including driving under the influence, resisting arrest, driving with an expired license and underage drinking while in Miami. The arrest followed Justin getting busted for allegedly drag racing a rented Lamborghini. A toxicology report revealed he also had marijuana and Xanax in his system at the time.

One of the most over-the-top weddings of the decade took place in 2014 when Kim Kardashian and Kanye West tied the knot. The superstar couple made things official in Florence, Italy, that May. Their ceremony took place at a 16th-century fortress, where they exchanged vows in front of an elaborate flower wall. The bride’s former stepdad, Caitlyn Jenner, walked her down the aisle as Andrea Bocelli serenaded guests, and in a shocking turn of events, not an E! camera was in sight. The wedding was not filmed for Kim’s reality show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” as her second wedding had been, and guests were prohibited from using cell phones during the ceremony. Among the stars in attendance who adhered to the no-phone rule? Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Jaden Smith and Serena Williams, to name a few. Kim wore Givenchy and her sisters, who also wore white, served as bridesmaids.

Caitlyn Jenner started her physical transformation in 2014 but didn’t make things official until 2015. Formerly known as Bruce Jenner, Caitlyn started filming her own docuseries to chronicle her transition into a woman in January 2015. In April, the transgender Olympic athlete-turned-reality TV star sat down with Diane Sawyer for an anticipated interview that aired on “20/20” in which she confirmed her gender identity and stated “I am a woman.” She reintroduced herself to the world in June on the cover of Vanity Fair, which read “Call me Caitlyn” as she debuted her new appearance and name. A month later, she took the stage at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles in a glamorous fitted white Versace gown to accept the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

Prior to May 2015, the deeply religious stars of TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting” were probably the least likely reality TV personalities the public would expect to find in the midst of a massive scandal. But when it was revealed that Josh Duggar had molested five underage girls (four of whom were his sisters) as a teen, TLC pulled the plug on the series. That August, it was also revealed that Josh was a user of the infidelity website Ashley Madison and he admitted he’d been unfaithful to his wife just a month after they welcomed their fourth child. Josh released a statement on his famous family’s official website in light of the allegations, stating: “I have been the biggest hypocrite ever. While espousing faith and family values, I have secretly over the last several years been viewing pornography on the internet and this became a secret addiction and I became unfaithful to my wife. I am so ashamed of the double life that I have been living and am grieved for the hurt, pain and disgrace my sin has caused my wife and family, and most of all Jesus and all those who profess faith in Him. I humbly ask for your forgiveness. Please pray for my precious wife Anna and our family during this time.” He spent nearly six months at a faith-based rehab facility and his wife took him back.

In October 2015, Lamar Odom was discovered unconscious at a brothel in Nevada. The former NBA player, who was still technically married to Khloe Kardashian at that point since their divorce had yet to be finalized, overdosed and had numerous drugs in his system at the time. Khloe was by his side as he lay in a coma for four days. Lamar, who was unable to talk or walk at first, eventually made a miraculous recovery after several weeks in the hospital, after which he headed to a private rehab center. Another year, another scandalous celebrity split. This time it was Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner calling it quits in June 2015 after 10 years of marriage. After they made the announcement, it was revealed that Ben was allegedly hooking up with their kids’ nanny, Christine Ouzounian. Jen got super-candid with Vanity Fair in March 2016, explaining, “We had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny. She had nothing to do with our decision to divorce. She was not a part of the equation. Bad judgment? Yes. It’s not great for your kids for [a nanny] to disappear from their lives… It was a real marriage. It wasn’t for the cameras. And it was a huge priority for me to stay in it. And that did not work.” The famous duo went on to have a seemingly civil split as they were often spotted out together with their children. Three years after their announcement — right after Ben completed a rehab stay for alcohol addiction — their divorce was finalized.

While in Paris for Fashion Week in October 2016, Kim Kardashian West was robbed at gunpoint. The thieves were dressed as police officers but wearing masks when they tied Kim up and locked her in a bathroom in her hotel apartment before stealing millions of dollars in valuables — including a second engagement ring Kanye West had given her that was worth $4 million. Kanye was mid-performance in the States when he heard the news and promptly announced there was a family emergency and left. In the wake of the terrifying ordeal, Kim upped her security detail and went on a three-month hiatus from both social media and the public eye. The fallout after the incident was later featured on Season 13 of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.”

For those who don’t consider themselves HGTV devotees, the names Tarek El Moussa and Christina El Moussa weren’t familiar until December 2016. It was then that the “Flip or Flop” stars’ messy divorce took over headlines, making them household names. The bizarre details of their breakup quickly circulated — including how during a fight the previous May, Tarek fled their Orange County, California, home with a gun as he ran off to some local hiking trails (he claimed he took it for protection against wild animals). Tarek filed for divorce in January 2017, but despite their personal issues, their massively popular HGTV show soldiered on. Aside from the Tarek and Christina-hosted original series, there are now franchises based in cities like Las Vegas, Atlanta, Fort Worth, Chicago and Nashville. The hosts continued to find themselves in the news as they moved on with their love lives: Tarek was reported to be dating their children’s former nanny for a minute while Christina moved on with a contractor, a hockey player, a drug-addicted ex boyfriend and, finally, “Wheeler Dealers” host Ant Anstead, whom she married in December 2018. They welcomed son Hudson in 2019 just a few months after Tarek revealed he was in a serious relationship with “Selling Sunset” star Heather Rae Young.

It’s over! Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie split in September 2016 after more than 11 years together and two years of marriage. Angelina filed for divorce and demanded full physical custody of their six children, and things promptly got messy in the press as it emerged that Brad was being investigated by Child Protective Services following an incident on a private plane involving at least one of his older sons (he was soon cleared of any wrongdoing). Their issues got more contentious as Brad fought for shared custody. It took more than two years for them to reach a custody agreement and another several months until a judge declared them legally single — though more than three years after Angie left Brad, they had yet to settle the financial side of their divorce or come to a permanent custody agreement.

2016 truly delivered in the celebrity feud department as Taylor Swift faced off with Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West. The bad blood started back in 2009 when Kanye rushed the stage during Taylor’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards because he was unhappy that Taylor had beat Beyonce in the best female video category, famously grabbing her mic and declaring, “Imma let you finish but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time…” Six years later, they publicly reconciled at the 2015 MTV VMAs, but by 2016, it was war again. The catalyst? Taylor took issue with lines in Kanye’s song “Famous” in which he claimed responsibility for her fame and called her a b—-. Kanye then tweeted that February that he’d received lyric approval from Taylor during an hour-long conversation. Taylor denied his story, insisting that she was “never made aware of the actual lyric.” A few months later, Kanye’s wife Kim clapped back at Taylor, backing up Kanye’s side of the story to GQ in June: “She totally approved that. She totally knew that that was coming out. She wanted to all of a sudden act like she didn’t.” A month later, Kim posted audio receipts on Snapchat. In the videos, Taylor — who was not told she was being recorded — can heard saying on the phone, “it’s like a compliment” and that she appreciated the “heads up” on a lyric. Yet Taylor still denied giving explicit approval for the line “I made that b—- famous” and wrote on Instagram, “I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, one that I have never asked to be a part of, since 2009.” Those that believed Kim and Kanye’s side of the story were quick to use a snake emoji on Taylor’s social media, insinuating that the squeaky-clean pop star was actually a sneaky snake in disguise. And in a very on-brand move, Taylor worked that snake motif into her new image with the release of her 2017 album, “Reputation.”

May 2016 saw another celebrity couple bite the dust after a little more than a year of marriage. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard announced their split, with Amber promptly filing a restraining order against Johnny, alleging domestic abuse, which the actor has repeatedly and vehemently denied. The restraining order was granted as it was accompanied by graphic photos of her battered face. This split would only get messier with time, with the couple going back and forth in the media and Amber sharing her story. Aside from the abuse allegations, money was also a point of contention in the split thanks to the couple not having a prenup. But it appeared to be settled by August. Amber publicly announced that she would donate her $7 million divorce settlement to charity and things seemed to be resolved, but Johnny refused to finalize things later that year. He apparently hadn’t donated the money owed to Amber and filed new court documents asking Amber to pay his legal fees. Their legal teams went back and forth making quite a spectacle of the split until it was finally resolved in January 2017. Then Johnny decided to sue Amber for defamation: The case was still playing out in the courts in late 2019.

It was the mixup seen ’round the world! While presenting the best picture Oscar at the 2017 Academy Awards, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were given the wrong envelope and announced the wrong winner. Instead of opening the best picture winner envelope, they opened a duplicate best actress envelope — that prize had gone to Emma Stone earlier — and Faye incorrectly announced that the best picture trophy was going to Emma’s movie, “La La Land.” Since that film was a frontrunner, there wasn’t much shock from the audience… until accountants and organizers realized the mistake and “La La Land” producer Justin Horowitz delivered the news onstage and showed the audience the real best picture envelope that revealed “Moonlight” was the true best picture winner.

Harvey Weinstein came under fire after years of sexual misconduct caught up with him in 2017. That October, The New York Times published a story about the producer filled with accounts from numerous women accusing him of sexual harassment. Days later, The New Yorker followed suit with more credible accusations. Well-known actresses including Gwyneth Paltrow, Rose McGowan, Salma Hayek and Ashley Judd all spoke up; in the end, more than 80 woman in the film industry had shared troubling tales. This led to the rise of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, which have advocated for victims to be believed and Hollywood behavior to change.

“Bachelor in Paradise,” a spinoff of the wildly successful reality competition “The Bachelor,” made unsavory headlines in 2017. The series, which mainly includes veterans from “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” shut down production that June after an incident occurred between Corinne Olympios and DeMario Jackson in a pool. The two seemed to be hitting it off, though Corinne was obviously intoxicated at the time — causing a producer to later file a complaint because she felt uncomfortable about the couple’s interactions. Corinne later released a statement calling herself a “victim” and sharing that she had “little memory” from that night. For his part, DeMario released a statement through his publicist, telling E! News, “It’s unfortunate that my character and family name has been assassinated this past week with false claims and malicious allegations. I will be taking swift and appropriate legal action until my name is cleared and, per the advice of legal counsel, will be seeking all available remedies entitled to me under the laws.” The production company later found no evidence of sexual assault after they launched an investigation and allowed filming to resume, but both Corinne and DeMario did not return. The two did, however, reunite on the finale of “Bachelor in Paradise,” with both noting they’d been in therapy since the scandal occurred.

What was the most liked photo on Instagram in 2017? That honor goes to Beyonce, who announced that she was pregnant with twins that February with an opulent snap of herself sitting in a bed of flowers baring her baby bump while wearing lingerie. That picture amassed more than 11.1 million likes in just a few hours, and that June, Beyonce gave birth to her newest additions, son Sir and daughter Rumi.

In February 2018, after months of speculation but no official confirmation from the famous Kardashian-Jenner family, Kylie Jenner welcomed her first child, daughter Stormi Webster, with rapper boyfriend Travis Scott, whom she’d been dating for less than a year. The makeup mogul made the announcement on Instagram via a text post that read, “I’m sorry for keeping you in the dark through all the assumptions. I understand you’re used to me bringing you along on all my journeys. My pregnancy was one I chose not to do in front of the world. I knew for myself I needed to prepare for this role of a lifetime in the most positive, stress free, and healthy way I knew how… My beautiful and healthy baby girl arrived February 1st and I just couldn’t wait to share this blessing. Khloe Kardashian had a rough start to 2018. While she was nine months pregnant, videos surfaced of her NBA player beau, Tristan Thompson, cheating on her with several different women. Khloe went into labor shortly after the news broke and gave birth to daughter True Thompson on April 12. Despite the infidelity, Khloe remained with Tristan. Unfortunately, that old “once a cheater, always a cheater” adage proved true: Less than a year later in February 2019, reports surfaced confirming that Tristan had once again cheated. This time, the woman in question was Jordyn Woods, Khloe’s sister Kylie Jenner‘s best friend. Khloe ended things immediately after Tristan admitted to the infidelity.

In April 2018, Bill Cosby was found guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand — the woman who accused him of drugging and assaulting her in his home years earlier. At his sentencing in September, the presiding judge labeled Bill a “sexually violent predator,” a stark contrast from having previously been known as “America’s Dad.” Bill was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison and taken away in handcuffs.

Though true love in Hollywood is rare, occasionally, a celebrity couple’s split sends shockwaves across the nation. April 2018 marked one of those times as Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan announced their split after nine years of marriage and one daughter together. The couple, who’d met making the 2006 dance flick “Step Up,” put out a statement, writing, “We have lovingly chosen to separate as a couple. We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together. Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now. Fans and fellow Hollywood stars were stunned when Luke Perry — the heartthrob who brought bad boy Dylan McKay to life on “Beverly Hills, 90210” in the ’90s — died in March 2019 after suffering a massive stroke. Luke, who was starring on the hit CW show “Riverdale” at the time of his unexpected passing, was just 52.

Back in the early ’90s, Michael Jackson was accused of child sexual abuse and settled out of court. More than a decade later, he was indicted on multiple counts of molesting a minor and was put on trial; a jury found him not guilty in 2005. In June 2009, he died at 50 after his personal physician administered propofol and two anti-anxiety medications, lorazepam and midazolam, that the King of Pop had been abusing. Dr. Conrad Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011 and sentenced to four years in prison. After years of goodwill toward Michael, in March 2019, questions about all those old, painful abuse allegations resurfaced when HBO released the documentary “Leaving Neverland.” Two men who’d once defended Michael during his tribulations were now speaking out about the sexual abuse they say they endured while spending time with the late superstar as children. James Safechuck (seen here with Michael on a private plane at age 10) and choreographer Wade Robson went public with their stories in the four-hour documentary, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Their detailed allegations sparked support as well as backlash as fans questioned the late music star’s pop culture legacy. Michael’s estate hit back at the allegations, with its lawyer slamming HBO for making the “disgraceful” decision to air the doc, which the estate maintains is based on “lies.”

In March 2019, news broke revealing that 50 people had been indicted in a huge college admissions cheating scandal. Among them? Two familiar faces — Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin. The “Desperate Housewives” star was implicated after she paid $15,000 to help her eldest daughter get a better score on the SAT, while the “Full House” star and designer husband Mossimo Giannulli were accused of paying $500,000 to get both of their daughters into the University of Southern California by falsifying athletic credentials. Felicity quickly copped to her bad behavior and pleaded guilty; she apologized profusely and was sentenced to just 14 days in prison, which she served in October 2019. As of late 2019, Lori’s legal future remained up in the air as she and Mossimo continued to fight the charges in their case.
