Brendan Fraser making movies again after ‘quitting fame’ and being ‘blacklisted’ by Hollywood
After claiming he’d been blacklisted by Hollywood and revealing his plans to quit fame in 2018, Brendan Fraser is back with a string of movies in the works. Fans of the Mummy and George of the Jungle star, 53, will be delighted to find he has a lot of films coming up.
The American-Canadian actor had an extremely meandering experience both in his life and his career. He was one of the biggest stars in the 1990s, but Brendan stopped playing major roles after 2008.
In a 2018 interview with GQ, Brendan spoke out about his traumatic experience in Hollywood and being “blacklisted” by the industry. Just as we thought he was going to stay away from the spotlight for good, he’s now returning with several films in production.
What happened to Brendan?
In his interview with GQ, Brendan alleged he was sexually assaulted by Philip Berk, the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 2003.
He said the alleged incident was one of the reasons behind his decision to step away from the spotlight.
The HFPA said in a statement to Us Weekly at the time: “The HFPA stands firmly against sexual harassment and the type of behavior described in this article.
“Over the years we’ve continued a positive working relationship with Brendan, which includes announcing Golden Globe nominees, attending the ceremony and participating in press conferences. This report includes alleged information that the HFPA was previously unaware of and at this time we are investigating further details surrounding the incident.”
Berk himself denied the accusations, telling GQ in a statement: “Mr Fraser’s version is a total fabrication. My apology admitted no wrongdoing, the usual ‘If I’ve done anything that upset Mr Fraser, it was it was not intended and I apologize’.”
He told the magazine there had been an investigation into the allegations and that the statement would “resolve him of any wrongdoing”. He added that he was not disciplined on the matter.
In April 2021, Berk was expelled from the HFPA two days after sending an article to his fellow members on email that described Black Lives Matter as a “racist hate movement”, Los Angeles Times reported.
Berk responded that he “only intended to illustrate the hypocricy [sic] that engulfs us I forwarded it as a point of information I had no hidden agenda I now regret having sent it.”
The board said in a statement: “Effective immediately, Phil Berk is no longer a member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.”
Meanwhile, Brendan also underwent numerous surgeries over the years, including a partial knee replacement, repairs on his vocal cords and one of his lumbar. Worse still, Brendan’s mother passed away in 2016. The actor said he became “reclusive” and “depressed” and he felt “ill, like a little child”.
Brendan’s comeback
Brendan has never disappeared entirely. Recently, he was seen in TV series Professionals, Doom Patrol and the movie No Sudden Move.
Brendan’s upcoming work includes Brothers, Killers of the Flower Man, Batgirl, The Whale and Behind the Curtain of Night.
In The Whale, Brendan plays a father trying to reconnect with his daughter after abandoning his family. The actor describes the movie as something audiences have never “seen before”.
He plays the villain Firefly in Batgirl.
According to nerds and beyond, Brendan is also expected to appear as a guest and participate in the panel at Emerald City Comic Con.
Do you remember Brendan Fraser?
Brendan had been a top star throughout the 1990s. He played Rick O’Connell in The Mummy trilogy and George in George of the Jungle, which was released 25 years ago today (July 16). The actor is also known for his roles in Airheads, Gods and Monsters, and Academy Award-winning movie Crash.
We can’t wait for Brendan’s return to the big screen and wish the best for him!
