CLEVELAND, Ohio – From Jen Psaki and Hillary Clinton testing positive to the BA.2 sub-variant and much more, here is our roundup of coronavirus facts, figures and numbers March 19-25, followed by our quotes of the week. (Note: This will be our final weekly coronavirus timeline. This week marks the timeline’s two-year anniversary.)
March 19
Pennsylvania Department of Health reports 691 new cases of coronavirus – taking the state’s total to 2,774,453 – and no new deaths. … Reuters says the seven-day moving average of U.S. Covid cases is 27,747, down almost 18% from a week earlier. … Reuters also reports that mainland China reported its first Covid deaths in more than a year, with two fatalities in the northeastern region of Jilin.
March 20
The New York Post reports that New York is moving toward 70,000 cumulative deaths from Covid. … Hundreds of thousands of people will be invited to book a spring booster this week as the National Health Service in England’s vaccination program enters a new phase. Eligible groups for boosters include ages 75 and older and those 12 and older who are immunosuppressed.
March 21
Our first coronavirus timeline was published two years ago today. … The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it will convene an advisory panel Wednesday, April 6, to discuss the country’s strategy for booster shots and selecting strains of the virus for a potential dedicated Covid vaccine. … The Los Angeles Times says the British Academy Film Awards, held March 13 along with accompanying parties, are suspected of having led to Covid infections – including among some of this year’s Oscar nominees, raising concerns that Hollywood’s big night could become a super-spreader event. Following the BAFTAs, filmmaker Kenneth Branagh, actor Ciarán Hinds, and filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller tested positive. Also, members of the team behind the documentary “The Rescue,” journalists, publicists, executives and others in attendance tested positive. … Shanghai Disneyland (above photo, bottom left) shut its doors today in the face of China’s rising omicron cases.
March 22
White House press secretary Jen Psaki (above photo, top right) says she has tested positive for Covid for a second time. She withdrew from joining President Biden on his scheduled trip a day later to Brussels and Warsaw. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announces she tested positive. Her husband, former President Bill Clinton, tested negative. … About one in three Covid cases in the United States are being attributed to the BA.2 omicron sub-variant.
March 23
CEOs of 10 airlines and cargo carriers sign a letter to President Biden, urging him to end the transportation mask mandate and testing requirements for international travelers.
March 24
Ohio reports 3,668 new cases in its weekly update. That averages to 524 new daily cases over seven days. Average for the previous week was 515 new cases per day. Total cumulative case count is 2,669,698. In Ohio, 37,793 people have died of Covid. … Reuters, citing the U.S. Census Bureau, says the pandemic led to a “natural decrease” last year in the population of nearly three-quarters of U.S. counties versus the two previous years. More than 73% of counties experienced an excess of deaths over births, up from 55.5% in 2020 and 45.5% in 2019. … Reuters reports that Singapore said it will soon lift quarantine requirements for all vaccinated travelers, joining countries in Asia moving toward a “living with the virus” approach. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the financial hub also will drop requirements to wear masks outdoors and allow larger-group gatherings.
March 25
The New York Times reports Shanghai, China’s largest city, is reporting more than 1,500 cases a day – most asymptomatic – and many residents are expressing anguish over China’s zero-tolerance approach to the virus. China has recorded more than 29,000 cases this month. … Tokyo reports 7,289 new cases, down 536 from the previous Friday, according to the Asahi Shimbun.

Charlie Baker, after Boston’s St. Patrick Day parade was staged Sunday after a two-year hiatus. Covid case numbers in Massachusetts are at their lowest since summer 2021, though analysts are keeping tabs on rising variant numbers in Europe.
• “Now is the time for the Administration to sunset federal transportation travel restrictions – including the international predeparture testing requirement and the federal mask mandate – that are no longer aligned with the realities of the current epidemiological environment.” – Industry group Airlines for America, in a letter to President Biden. The White House had moved the end of the transportation mask mandate to Monday, April 18.
