The Capture

Similarities – Conspiracy & Mystery

BBC drama The Capture is an intriguing drama let down by a cliffhanger ending that (at the time anyway) was uncertain to return for a second season. Well, thankfully BBC have renewed this which makes recommending it a lot easier. The show centers around a big conspiracy that sometimes gets a little too big for the 6 episodes on offer but it just about holds it together until the end.

When a British soldier called Shaun Emery is arrested, CCTV footage shows him assaulting a young woman he met the previous night. Only, Shaun Emery is adamant he didn’t do it. Tenacious young detective DI Rachel Carey then starts to look into his case in more detail, finding a shocking multi-layered conspiracy that challenges everything we know about security and surveillance.

If you don’t mind an open-ending, The Capture is certainly worth checking out.

Homeland

Similarities – Espionage, Uncovering The Truth

Homeland follows the story of a CIA officer, Carrie Mathison, who becomes convinced that Nicholas Brody, a U.S. Marine Sergeant rescued after being held captive by terrorists, has been turned and poses a threat to national security. The show revels in its suspenseful tone and thriller vibes, with plenty of espionage, terrorism, and national security issues. Not only that, but the show also explores Carrie’s personal struggles with mental illness.

Both this and Rabbit Hole involve intelligence officers working to uncover and learn the truth, with twists and turns along the way to keep things exciting.

Similarities – Keifer Sutherland, Action

24 centers on Jack Bauer, a counter-terrorism agent working for the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU). Each season covers 24 hours of real-time, with Jack facing various terrorist threats and conspiracies across the 24 episodes. The show’s real-time format and high stakes make it tense and action-packed, although some of the stories shine brighter than others.

Rabbit Hole shares more than a few similarities to 24, given they both follow counter-terrorism agents working against the clock to discover the truth and stop the bad guys. Both shows feature intense action and high-stakes situations, making it an easy recommendation.

The Outsider

Similarities – Mystery & Possessions

Stephen King TV adaptations are usually very good or very bad. While The Outsider is far from perfect, the story is absolutely gripping and you’ll undoubtedly be hooked until the very end.

The basic premise revolves around a group of investigators completely baffled by an unspeakable crime that’s been committed. We won’t go into spoiler territory, but where this one really shines is with its characters, who are beautifully written throughout.

If you’re in the mood for a good thriller, with lots of questions raised throughout, this one has all the right ingredients to hook you in and keep you glued until the end.

Counterpart

Similarities – Atmosphere

The interesting thing with Counterpart is just how normalized its sci-fi elements are. Here, we’re dealing with parallel worlds, and in particular one that’s accessible via a pathway guarded by government authorities.

At the centre of this lies Howard Silk who inadvertently winds up entangled in a big cover up and face to face with his doppelganger from a parallel reality.

Trouble is brewing though, leading Howard and his double to trade places and grapple with a plot line involving powerful forces intent on disrupting the natural flow of both worlds.

This is a smartly written espionage thriller and although only running for 2 seasons, does well to add a slightly different flavour to its parallel worlds idea.

Utopia (2013)

Similarities – Conspiracy, Drama

If there’s one show that really takes the idea of a deep conspiracy and runs with it, it’s Utopia. This version is vastly superior to Amazon’s dud remake and it’s easy to see why.

The striking colours, moody atmosphere and unflinching storyline are well-poised to make the most of this British cult hit, with a story centering on a group of people who meet online, discover a bizarre graphic novel, and then together find themselves tracked down by a merciless organization known as “The Network”

Although the second season does end on an unresolved note, don’t let that deter you from this timeless gem.

Bodyguard

Similarities – Action, Politics

Bodyguard is a British series that follows the life of David Budd, a war veteran suffering from PTSD who now works as a Police Sergeant in the Royalty and Specialist Protection unit. He is assigned to protect the controversial Home Secretary, Julia Montague (played by Keeley Hawes), whose political views he strongly opposes.

The opening scene of the first episode is intense, revolving around a train bombing, and that alone manages to set the tone and mood of The Bodyguard beautifully.

In The Bodyguard, David gets drawn into a web of political intrigue and terrorism, forcing him to balance his duty with his personal beliefs, as well as navigate the dangerous waters surrounding his assignment.

Rellik

Similarities – Action, Politics

BBC One’s drama Rellik is a creative, fascinating series, and it features a unique way of telling its story. Specifically, the tale is told in reverse order. This creative narrative takes more than a few ideas from Nolan’s excellent film Memento, but the execution in series format is handled pretty well.

There are enough clever twists and an intriguing narrative woven through the 6 episodes to keep the suspense and mystery high. Although the story is much more geared toward catching a serial killer than unveiling an intricate conspiratorial web.

Mr. Robot

Similarities – Social Commentary & Characters

Thought provocative, thrilling and incredibly stylish, Amazon exclusive Mr. Robot is a slickly made thriller that depicts the shady underworld of hacking perfectly.  With dark, minimally lit scenes and a gripping plot woven throughout its four seasons, Mr. Robot manages to enthrall from start to finish.

It’s not only one of the smarter written shows on TV, it’s also one that closes out its fourth season with a near-perfect finale. The least said about this one the better and if you’re looking for a show on-par with the best in the genre – Mr Robot is a must-watch.

Devs

Similarities – Atmosphere & Suspense

Produced by Alex Garland, Devs revolves around a girl called Lily working at a tech company called Amaya. When her boyfriend Sergei is invited to join the top secret branch there known as Devs, everything changes.

Unfortunately, Sergei stumbles onto something he shouldn’t and his disappearance sparks some big questions, which Lily aims to answer.

While the story is a tad overlong, the thought provoking questions and moody atmosphere are enough to stick it out until the end. There’s an absolutely incredible musical score attached to this one too, which is easily the big highlight of the show.
