Obscure Jenna Ortega Film Makes Huge Debut On Netflix US Top 10 Movies Chart
Jenna Ortega is a big hit on Netflix again, but not because of her smash hit series Wednesday.
Instead, it’s Ortega’s provocative R-rated psychological thriller Miller’s Girl, which only had a one-week run in domestic theaters before it began streaming on Netflix on April 26.
Miller’s Girl debuted at No. 5 on Netflix’s Top 10 U.S. Movies chart Tuesday, which recognizes the streamer’s most viewed movies from April 29 to May 5. Unlike Netflix’s Global Top 10 Movies chart, however, data for the number of views and viewing hours is not revealed.
Last week’s No. 1 movie on the U.S. chart — the rom-com Anyone But You —remained in the top spot followed by The Judge, Unfrosted and The Great Wall.
An obscure movie that barely made a dent at the domestic box office when it was released in January, Miller’s Girl earned $321,000 during its one-week run in 350 theaters.
Netflix notes on its app that Miller’s Girl is rated R for “sexual content, language throughout, some teen smoking and drinking.”
Also, the description of the film on the platform reads, “In this erotic thriller, a high school student enters a precarious relationship with her creative writing teacher.”
While Ortega has attracted a family-friendly audience on Netflix before playing the title character Wednesday Addams in the 2022 macabre comedy series Wednesday, she also has appeared in other R-rated films.
In addition to starring opposite Mia Goth in the 2022 R-rated indie horror hit X, Ortega starred in the R-rated horror comedies Scream and Scream VI in 2022 and 2023. In the Scream films Ortega stars as Tara Carpenter opposite the films’ co-lead Melissa Barrera, who plays Tara’s sister, Sam Carpenter.
Why Is Miller’s Girl So Controversial?
Miller’s Girl stars Jenna Ortega as Cairo Sweet, an 18-year-old high school senior who seeks the help of a literature teacher, Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman) for a writing assignment.
The teacher-student relationship strays into inappropriate territory, though, when Jonathan meets Cairo at a poetry reading outside of school and then takes a call from her and visits her home.
The film becomes even more controversial, though, with a fantasy depiction of an intense romance involving Cairo and Jonathan — another stark reminder of the inappropriateness of the the teacher-student relationship and the large age gap between the two.
While Jonathan’s age is not revealed in Miller’s Girl, Ortega is 21 years old in real life and Freeman is 52.
Freeman addressed the Miller’s Girl controversy in a recent interview with The Times of London, saying the film was “grown up and nuanced” but also was careful to say, “It’s not saying, ‘Isn’t this great?'”
Miller’s Girl premiered at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January before embarking on its $321,000 domestic run. The film’s international tally was $465,400 bringing its combined worldwide total to $889,500 at the worldwide box office against a $4 million production budget.
Ortega is slated to appear in a pair of upcoming films. First, she will star opposite her Wednesday castmate Percy Hynes White in the comedy-drama romance Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, which will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City in June.
Then in September, Ortega will reunite with her Wednesday director Tim Burton for the long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. In the film, Ortega plays Astrid Deetz, the daughter of original Beetlejuice character Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder).
Michael Keaton, of course, is reprising his role of the zany bio-exorcist from the 1988 supernatural comedy classic.
Ortega is also filming the second season of Wednesday, which is expected to debut on Netflix in 2025.
