Indian actress Sweta Keswani on working in Hollywood: “It’s not a walk in the park”
Actress Sweta Keswani was a familiar face on Television a decade and a half ago. She starred in popular TV shows like, ‘Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii’, ‘Abhimaan’ and ‘Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand’. But she has been missing in action from Indian entertainment for the last 11 years.
This is because the actress moved to New York more than a decade ago and has since then been trying to make her way into Hollywood. Her slow arduous journey found some fruition as the actress managed to land a couple of guest roles in shows like ‘New Amsterdam’ and ‘Blacklist’.
The actress confessed that it has not been an easy journey for her as she couldn’t find a manager who would push forward and stand up for her.
Speaking about making it in Hollywood, Shweta said, “No one knew me here or my long history on Indian television and no one cared. I was barely on social media. The shift happened ever so gradually after hundreds of auditions and hundreds of hours and dollars in accent work and coaching with different acting coaches in Los Angeles and New York. The traction is just since the last two years when preparation finally met opportunity. And the hard work started paying off. It’s not been a walk in the park as you can see! But it’s given me tremendous fortitude and added volumes to my skill set as an actor.”
Shweta Keswani did co-write and co-produce a web series before the pandemic that won her an award of excellence at The Vegas Movie Awards. In the meanwhile, she has also been working with local theatre companies and she says that in retrospect she would not take away the hustle of making it.
She adds that one advantage of the small-time roles and not being busy with acting work was that she could spend time with her daughter Ismara during her formative growing up years. She ended by saying, “Plus if I worked the long hours I had in the past in India when I first moved here to New York I would’ve never gotten the time with my one and only child, my most precious asset, Ismara, who needed me in her formative years.”
Shweta Keswani will soon be seen in the Apple+ series ‘Roar’ which also stars Nicole Kidman, Merritt Weaver, Cynthia Erivo and Alison Brie. She has also landed a role in the comedy movie, ‘As They Made Us’.
