GTA 3: The unrecognisable voice actors in Rockstar’s iconic game
Despite its age Grand Theft Auto 3 remains a classic video game in every sense of the word, and well worth at least one playthrough for gamers keen to see what all the fuss is about.
At the time it was groundbreaking, as Rockstar Games shifted away from its top-down perspective that did so well in early GTA game releases to a proper 3D entry in the series.
But it wasn’t just the shift in graphics that proved so popular, the game had a legendary list of celebrity voice actors who helped elevate the game’s story to new heights too.
Though the main character, Claude, was silent and never spoke a line of dialogue, there were plenty of A-List talent to do all the talking. Although you might not instantly recognise them.
Here’s a look at some of those unrecognisable actors who helped lend their talent to arguably one of the best games ever made.
Joe Pantoliano as Luigi Goterelli
You’ll struggle to find a Hollywood actor with quite so many memorable roles that have spanned quite so many different types of characters.
It seems like Pantoloiano has done it all, with a range that has seen him portray everything from the shouty Captain Howard in Bad Boys, to the scene stealing hacker Cypher in The Matrix.
Arguably though, it was Pantoliano’s many years on The Sopranos as Ralph Cifaretto that likely helped most of all when it came to taking on the role of Luigi Goterelli in GTA 3.
Loud, hot-headed and definitely a little bit too aggressive – it fit Pantoliano’s unhinged acting style down to a tee.

Michael Madsen as Toni Cipriani
Another big hollywood hitter who turned in another fantastic performance in GTA 3.
You’ll likely know of Madsen from his legendary performance as the psychopathic Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs; but with over 300 acting credits to his name there’s no doubt you’ll have seen or heard his threatening raspy tones somewhere or other.
In GTA 3 Madsen fit perfectly as mobster Toni Cipriani, arguably one of the games most relaxed but clearly menacing tough guys to work for the Leone crime family.
Kyle MacLachlan as Donald Love
Twin Peaks, Desperate Housewives, Sex in the City, Dune. The list of incredible films and TV shows feels absolutely endless when it comes to discussing the career of Kyle MacLachlan.
When it came to GTA 3, the normally soft spoken MacLachlan was perfectly cast as Donald Love, a calm and meticulous corrupt businessman with a lot of secrets.
Somewhat fittingly for MacLachlan – who has a long history of portraying slightly unhinged and dark characters – Donald Love also turned out to be the one character who was secretly a serial cannibal.
It’s just a shame Love was recast in GTA Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
Michael Rapaport as Joey Leone
Whilst arguably not as big a star as some of those already mentioned, you’ll have no doubt seen Michael Rapaport pop up in various film and TV roles.
From Tony Scott’s True Romance, to Phoebe Buffay’s one time boyfriend in Friends, we’ve no doubt you’ll recognise the actor.
In GTA 3 though, Rapaport was put to good use by channeling him inner New Yorker accent for the character of Joey Leone who runs an auto body shop in Liberty City – which itself was Rockstar’s interpretation of New York City.
