Australian tennis legend Rennae Stubbs slams Nick Kyrgios over outburst in Wimbledon loss to Novak Djokovic
The Aussie copped heavy criticism for his behaviour in the Wimbledon final with Novak Djokovic where he launched expletive-filled rants in front of the Royals, demanded a supposed drunk crowd member to be thrown out and screamed at his own team in a trademark Nick Kyrgios match.
Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been called out by a fellow compatriot over his “embarassing” acts in the Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic.
The world No.40 men’s player was vying to become the first Australian champion at the All England Club since Lleyton Hewitt conquered the grass court two decades ago.
A composed Djokovic overcame a frustrated Kyrgios in front of a star-studded crowd, which included Hollywood actors and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their eldest child, George, over four sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3).
Kyrgios entered his first final of a Grand Slam tournament as the underdog against the veteran Serbian who has been forced out of tournaments due to his vaccination status.
The Australian showed no signs of nerves in the first set where he put on a near-faultless display with a trademark underarm serve, plenty of drop shots and a serving masterclass that left Djokovic in search for answers.
But the tide quickly turned for the former No.1 who kept a level head and returned in the second set to break Kyrgios for the first time ever in all their head-to-head matches.
A frustrated Kyrgios repeatedly turned to his player’s box after each long rally and when he threw away a 0-40 lead – he demanded more support from his family.
“Say something!” he screamed towards them. “It’s 0-40. God damn! It’s 0-40!”
“Why didn’t you say something? Does it get any bigger or what? You want a bigger one – it’s not big enough for you?” he said about his serves.
“There’s no bigger match. Well done guys, I can’t do anything. Do you f***ing care or what?”
Two unforced errors from the angry Australian brought the unfazed Djoker back to level the match at one set a piece.
Australian tennis legend Rennae Stubbs took a swipe at Kyrgios for how he acted towards his family, which included girlfriend Costeen Hatzi, seated in the player’s box.
“Honestly, this behaviour of yelling at your box because they aren’t doing what u want, is actually beyond ridiculous. THEY CAN’T READ YOUR MIND!” she wrote on Twitter.
“Yes this is his way of dealing with pressure, I get it but this is straight up constant abuse to people that you love, it’s embarassing.”
The third set was much more tight between the pair with extended rallies wowing crowds and each game became closer on Kyrgios’ serve.
However, the fifth game took a turn when the hot-headed Aussie claimed a woman spoke or yelled out while he was 40-30 up before it went to deuce.
He held serve but at the change of ends he demanded to the chair umpire the crowd member be removed from the match as it had nearly cost him a game.
“She’s distracting me when I’m serving in a Wimbledon final,” he told the umpire.
“There’s no bigger occasion, you didn’t believe me and then she did it again. It nearly cost me the game.”
“Why is she still here? She’s drunk out of her mind and speaking to me in the middle of a game. What’s acceptable?”
A double fault and an unforced error from Kyrgios allowed Djokovic to serve and win the third in the longest set of the match.
Kyrgios briefly calmed down for the fourth set but continued to talk under his breath after the wild outburst only minutes earlier.
The duo held their service games to send the fourth set into a tie-break.
A double fault from the Australian and a routine forehand into the net from the Serb kept Djokovic slightly ahead 2-1.
But it quickly changed when two rogue forehands on the Australian’s serve stretched the lead out for the 20-time Grand Slam winner.
A return into the net and an unforced error from Kyrgios all but gave Djokovic a comfortable enough lead (6-1) to secure his seventh Wimbledon title.
Kyrgios – broke the rules of wearing all white when he wore a red cap during the award ceremony presented by Kate Middleton – was asked if he would be able to go one better and win next year at the All England Club.
“Absolutely not. I’m so tired, honestly,” he responded.
“Myself, my team, I think we’re all exhausted, we played so much tennis. I definitely need a well-earned vacation after this one.
“I’m just really happy with this result, it’s probably the best of my career and maybe one day I will be here again, but I don’t know about that.”
Djokovic – whose relationship has grown with the Aussie after he supported the Serb when he was thrown out of the Australian Open earlier this year – was more optimistic.
“Nick, you’ll be back. Not just at Wimbledon, but in finals,” the world No.3 said to the cheers of the crowd.
“It’s tough to find consolation words after a tough loss like this, but you showed why you deserve to be one of the best players in the world, particularly on this surface.
“I wish you all the best. I really respect you a lot. I think you’re a phenomenal tennis player and athlete and an amazing talent.”
The Serbian athlete joked he never thought he’d “say so many nice things” before confirming it was “officially a bromance”.
Djokovic moves within one Grand Slam title win of Rafael Nadal who secured two majors this year to be the greatest of all time.
