Avatar: The Way of Water

Twentieth Century Studios’ Avatar: The Way of Water has become the top-selling movie in the 2023 U.K. home entertainment market in just its first week of release.

With unit sales in excess of 160,000 just on digital downloads, the long-awaited sequel to 2009’s Avatar generated the biggest first-week sales since Paramount Home Entertainment’s Top Gun: Maverick (Number 5 this week) debut in August 2022.

Last week’s chart topper, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical dropped one spot to No. 2, while Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s Elvis enjoys a surge up the chart to No. 3.

As families enjoy the Easter holidays, Hop (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment) returned to the Top 10 at No. 4, a brand new peak for the 2011 animated led by voice actors Russell Brand and James Marsden, among others.

Universal’s M3GAN made its U.K. home entertainment sales bow at No. 6 on digital downloads only.

Dropping five places is former chart topper, Sony’s A Man Called Otto (7), finishing just ahead of Paramount’s Babylon (8) which climbed one spot. Sony’s biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody (9) re-entered the Top 10 after climbing seven spots. Finally, Universal’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish floats dropped five spots to No. 10.
