‘Barbie’ Just Surpassed ‘The Avengers’ In U.S. Earnings—Here Are The 10 Movies Still Beating It
Topline
After earning $3.5 million in its ninth weekend in theaters, Barbie has now surpassed Marvel’s Avengers to become the 11th top-earning film of all time in terms of domestic sales.
Key Facts
Barbie has generated $626 million at the domestic box office since its July 21 release, edging past 2012’s The Avengers‘ $623 million in earnings and working its way toward the top 10 best-performing American movies of all time, according to Box Office Mojo.
Barbie was the fifth highest-grossing film of the weekend behind The Nun II, A Haunting in Venice, Equalizer 3 and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3—marking the ninth consecutive weekend that Barbie has placed in the top five films.
Beating Avengers is the latest in a list of accolades that are still pouring in for the Grega Gerwig-directed film: Barbie surpassed The Super Mario Bros. Movie in August to become the highest-earning film of the year.
The film also holds the records for Warner Bros.’ highest grossing domestic release and the biggest domestic opening ever for a non-superhero film or sequel, and pushed Gerwig to become the highest-grossing female director of all time at the domestic box office.
Barbie is currently the 14th highest-earning film of all time at the worldwide box office with $1.4 billion in earnings, per Box Office Mojo, despite having been banned in a handful of countries: Vietnam banned the film for showing a map with Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea, Kuwait said the film promoted “ideas and beliefs that are alien to the Kuwaiti society and public order” and Algeria provided no reason for pulling Barbie from theaters.
Big Number
$27,284,482. That’s how much Barbie would still need to earn to break into the top 10 highest-earning domestic films.

Tangent
Warner Bros. confirmed to Variety last week it will campaign for Barbie to be nominated for Academy Awards in the categories of best original screenplay, best supporting actor for Ryan Gosling and others. This Oscar season could also be a record-breaking one for Margot Robbie: The star and producer of the film would become the second woman ever nominated for best picture and acting in the same year if Barbie scores the nominations, per Variety.
Surprising Fact
The National Toy Hall of Fame last week announced the Ken doll as one of 12 finalists that could be inducted this year. The Mattel doll is up against the Bop It, board games Battleship and Connect 5 and other nominees. Christopher Bensch, vice president for collections, told the Associated Press it may be time for Ken to “share some of the spotlight.” Barbie has been in the hall of fame since it opened in 1998.
