Long before she struck up a romance with heartthrob Harry Styles, actress Olivia Wilde was married to Italian royalty, Tao Ruspoli.

Wilde was only 19 when she tied the knot with Ruspoli in 2003.

The couple married on a school bus in Virginia with just one pair of witnesses, with Wilde later revealing they chose this venue as it was the only place they could be “completely alone”, as their union was a secret.

Ruspoli is the son of Italian aristocrat Prince Alessandro Ruspoli, 9th Prince of Cerveteri.

“Everyone expects him to pick me up in a limo or a yacht. Then Tao rolls up in this old Thunderbird, wearing flip flops, his hair all crazy,” Olivia once said.

“People are like, ‘He’s a prince?'”

After their elopement, Wilde joked that her father suffered a “minor heart attack” when he found out about their marriage.

“My dad did have a minor heart attack, and it was hard to imagine settling down at the time,” Wilde told Women’s Health of her teenage wedding.

“But there was this wave of romantic excitement and an overwhelming sense that we were supposed to be family. We were very open to the idea that if it didn’t work, we would let it go its course. No pressure.”

The couple stayed together for eight years, before filing for divorce in 2011.

“I had grown up with Tao; we had just drifted,’ Wilde admitted to Marie Claire at the time.

Wilde went on to meet her ex-partner Jason Sudeikis in 2011, the couple sharing two children, before calling it quits in 2020.

The actress-turned-director is now dating One Direction‘s Harry Styles, a romance she has kept largely tight-lipped about.
