Central New York filmmaker Jeremy Garelick, the founder of Liverpool-based American High, just scored the biggest opening weekend of his career.

“Murder Mystery 2,” directed by Garelick, drew more than 42 million views over its first three days of availability on Netflix. The “Murder Mystery” sequel, starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, had 64.42 million hours viewed total since its March 31 debut and appeared in the top 10 in 91 countries.

It’s the second-biggest opening weekend for a comedy film on Netflix, according to Variety. Only “Don’t Look Up,” the 2021 apocalyptic satire starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep, had a bigger opening weekend on the streaming service.

The first “Murder Mystery” was the most popular film of 2019 on Netflix with 30.8 million unique accounts watching its premiere. (Netflix reportedly counts “views” as viewers who watch at least 70 percent of a title.) “Murder Mystery” remains popular with 24.7 million hours viewed this past week.

While it’s hard to compare streaming service viewership to box office figures, 42 million is a huge number. For some perspective, the biggest opening weekend in theaters last year was $187,420,998 for Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”; an average movie ticket reportedly cost $11.75 in 2022, which means an estimated 16 million people saw the MCU film that weekend. If you do the math, “Murder Mystery 2″ had more than twice as many viewers in its first three days.

That’s good news for Netflix and Garelick, who said the budget for “Murder Mystery 2″ was more than that of all 15 movies shot by American High over the past five years, combined. Garelick’s other credits include writing “The Break-Up” (also starring Aniston) and directing titles like “The Wedding Ringer” and “The Binge.”

“Murder Mystery 2″ stars Sandler and Aniston as Nick and Audrey Spitz, now full-time detectives investigating the abduction of the Maharajah at his own island wedding. The whodunnit film, which also takes them to Paris, includes scenes filmed at the actual Eiffel Tower, car chases, explosions and more.

“Murder Mystery 2″ is not an American High movie, but still has some of the same spirit. The cast includes actors who shot American High films produced by Garelick in Syracuse, like Annie Mumolo (”Looks That Kill”) and Kuhoo Verma (“Plan B”).

Former “Saturday Night Live” writer Jillian Bell also has a role in “Murder Mystery 2″ and is writing an upcoming American High movie that may shoot this fall, Garelick said last week at a local screening of the film. American High recently renewed its deal with Hulu to make more movies in the Syracuse area.

“Murder Mystery 2,” written by James Vanderbilt and also starring Mark Strong (“Shazam!”), Adeel Akhtar (“Enola Holmes”), John Kani (“Black Panther”), Jodie Turner-Smith (“Queen & Slim”), and Tony Goldwyn (“Ghost”), is now streaming on Netflix.
