Coleen Rooney and Rebekah return to court for trial

Rebekah Vardy ‘fell out with Girls Aloud’s Sarah Harding in 2018 because she was apparently caught taking pictures of the contents of her handbag at the National Television Awards’, a court heard.

Coleen Rooney, 36, made the claim in a witness statement she supplied as part of the Wagatha Christie libel trial.

Vardy was accused by Rooney of leaking fake stories about her in October 2019.

The 40-year-old denies the allegations and is suing Rooney, the wife of England star Wayne, for libel.

In a witness statement, Rooney said: “As an aside, I am aware that Becky had attended the 2018 National Television Awards and produced and provided various pieces of ‘behind the scenes’ footage for The Sun.

“She also got into a spat with former Girls Aloud group member Sarah Harding during the 2018 event because Sarah apparently caught Becky taking photographs of the contents of Sarah’s handbag when Sarah had dropped it on the floor. Their dispute subsequently appeared in The Sun.”

Sarah Harding announced that she had breast cancer in August 2020 and tragically passed away at the age of 39 in September last year.

Day four of the explosive Wagatha Christie trial began today with Rebekah Vardy taking to the stand at the High Court in London.

Dressed in a tailored black suit and white shirt, the WAG meant business as she headed into the legal showdown against Coleen.

Having been grilled by Rooney’s lawyer David Sherborne QC over a period of 10 hours since the trial began on Tuesday, Rebekah was quizzed by her barrister Hugh Tomlinson QC in the witness stand.

Coleen was then sworn in where she told the court the sting was a “last resort” and how she had tried “in vain” to resolve the legal battle with Rebekah.

In one of the bombshell moments from today, Coleen told how she was in a “vulnerable situation” when a story was allegedly leaked from her private Instagram, during marriage problems with Wayne.

Rooney highlighted a story which referenced a picture of Wayne in their bed with their children at a time when the couple’s relationship was on the rocks.

“There had been a situation. There had been some wrong-doing by my husband,” she said. “I was in a vulnerable situation. I didn’t know how my marriage was going to work out.

“What was going on with that relationship. We needed to try and work things out.”

She said the article – suggesting Wayne was back in her bed – affected their relationship.

“I was spending a lot of time at my parents’ house,” she said. “My and Wayne were trying to figure out our relationship and see where things were going.

“But I didn’t want the public to know that.

“I knew how quick the papers are to jump onto things.

“I hadn’t settled on, ‘this is it – we are getting back together?”’

The trial continues.
