Undone features a cast of characters, created through rotoscope animation, in a world that jolts audiences back and forth between dreamscapes and reality. The story follows Alma Winograd-Diaz (Rosa Salazar), a young girl living in San Antonio, who can manipulate time after she is injured in a near-fatal car accident. Actress Constance Marie (Selena) plays her loving albeit sometimes overbearing mother Camila Diaz.

When it was time to slowly return to production in Hollywood last year, Marie said a series like Undone was the perfect opportunity to show everyone that it could be done in a safe way since the entire team could function with a minimal number of people.

“Undone was optimal for shooting during the reopening because we could get the crew down to like eight people,” Marie, 56, told MySA during a recent interview. “We had been isolated for so long. It was refreshing to get back to a show with familial connections with the other actors. It felt like a great homecoming.”

Creating the second season of Undone, of course, took extra time to complete since it takes digital effects companies a while to turn the live-action scenes into animation using rotoscoping technology. When Marie saw herself transformed into an animated character for the first time, she thought the complex animation process was well worth it, especially with the amount of pressure women receive in the entertainment industry.

“I looked pretty good – that’s all I gotta say,” Marie said. “It’s so freeing because as an actress of a certain age, there’s so much talk about how you look and how you’re aging. Your body, your wrinkles. With the rotoscoping, all that goes out the window. It’s very forgiving.”

With the second season of Undone, Marie is excited to give audiences more insight into the way “Camila is why she is.” In the series, Camila is always worried about her daughter, which causes some clashing between them throughout the first season.

“She’s a little bit of a hard-a– in Season 1,” Marie admits. “She is from the school of tough love. One of my favorite things about the show is that we look at generational trauma and the origins of family dysfunction. We get to time travel back and take a compassionate view and see what Camila has gone through and the decisions she’s made and some of the things that have shaped who she is. It’s a wonderful gift.”

Another gift for Marie is that Undone is set in San Antonio, a city, she said, that “will always have a place in her heart” because of the experiences she had making Selena 25 years ago.

“We were in San Antonio for five months,” she said. “I love the people there. The fact that [Undone is set there], and we can represent as brown people, makes me so proud.”
