US actor Liev Schreiber visited Przemyśl just before Easter to work as a volunteer helping refugees from war-torn Ukraine, it has been revealed. 

Schreiber worked at the World Central Kitchen (WCK), a kitchen run by an American organisation that prepares meals for thousands of people every day at the border. 

Born of Jewish-German-French heritage, the Hollywood star also counts a Polish connection thanks to a maternal grandfather from Łódź.Darek Delmanowicz/PAP

The actor helped cook borscht for 1,500 people. “The first day in Przemyśl. World Central Kitchen is still a star that serves and feeds those who have lost almost everything,” he wrote on Instagram.

The following day, he posted a video in which he could be seen cutting a large heap of parsley.

On Instagram, he posted photos and described the stories of people from all over the world who he met in Przemyśl.

“When I asked him why, he said, ‘Just to help.’ Tony and a team of Chicago chefs organised a fundraiser for World Central Kitchen in Chicago and raised USD 600,000,” Schreiber wrote.

Others he met included Anna Bornstein, who worked as a nurse in Mozambique after Hurricane Ida.

“For the past three years, Anna has used her international development diploma and exceptional organisational skills to coordinate medical assistance, evacuation, food delivery, cooking and Covid protocols. Anna is now the WCK Relief Operations Manager in Poland,” he wrote.

During Easter, Schreiber crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border on foot and travelled to Lviv from where he posted pictures of musicians from the Lviv orchestra practising Mozart’s Requiem.

Formerly married to Hollywood royalty Naomi Watts, Schreiber’s credits include writing and directing Everything is Illumination, a film that tells the story of a young American with Jewish roots who travels to Ukraine to find the woman who saved his grandfather during WWII.
