AUSTIN, Texas — The stars are back in Austin as the SXSW Film Festival brings some of this year’s biggest movie premiers.

Saturday was the world premiere of Apple TV’s new series, “WeCrashed,” starring Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway. The series follows the rise and fall of the startup company WeWork, with Leto playing WeWork co-founder Adam Neumann and Hathaway playing his wife Rebekah. “WeCrashed” highlights the love story that was the driving force behind the company’s creation.

Hathaway said she loved working with Leto, saying the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman never broke character on set.

“Jared just wasn’t Jared on set,” she said on the red carpet of the “WeCrashed” premier. “He was only Adam Neumann, and I was Rebekah Neumann and we were very in love and we had each other’s backs and he was a joy to work with.”

Though he lacks any experience working a desk job — he said the closest he’s gotten to a desk was writing music for his band — Leto said he went the extra mile to get into character for his performance as Adam Neumann.

“I did dig deep with the research,” he said. “It was one of those roles because the story is so recent and relevant there was just a ton of material, so I was able to kind of bury myself in that and I loved it.”

Tony Hawk also made an appearance on the red carpet with the help of crutches and a few handlers. He was there for the debut of the HBO Max documentary on his life, “Until the Wheels Fall Off,” just days after breaking his femur.

Hawk said out of all of his life’s challenges, just being there was one of his life’s biggest tests.

“The last time I had anything like this was 2004, almost 20 years ago when I broke my pelvis,” he said. “I was super impatient then. This one feels like it’s more manageable, but it’s still debilitating.”

It’s one of many setbacks Hawk has had to face during his long career as arguably the greatest skateboarder of all time. Those challenges are detailed in the documentary, directed by Sam Jones, and Hawk said he’s couldn’t be happier that people will get to see them from his perspective.

“It’s an honor that Sam chose me to focus on,” he said. “It’s really scary but at the same time kind of freeing.”

Despite his injury and the nerves from the premier, Hawk was still in a playful mood when I asked if he’d send me a signed skateboard if I manage to get a platinum trophy on his titular game, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 for Playstation.

“I will, yes,” he responded. “If I can walk.”
