Ian McKellen Responds To Elizabeth Olsen’s MCU Magneto Choice
X-Men star Ian McKellen, who played the villain Magneto, has responded to Scarlet Witch actress Elizabeth Olsen naming him her Magneto of choice for the MCU.
In Marvel’s comic universe, Magneto was the father of the twins Pietro and Wanda Maximoff – Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. Mutants are yet to be introduced to the MCU, meaning Marvel Studios opted to take a different approach to their live-action versions of Pietro and Wanda, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen respectively. In the MCU, their powers derive from the Mind Stone and Hydra’s experiments. However, following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, Marvel Studios has now regained the film rights to Marvel’s roster of mutants, opening the door to Magneto being retroactively introduced as Wanda’s true father.
In an interview with Geek Culture, Elizabeth Olsen was asked which previous live-action version of Magneto she would want introduced as Wanda’s father – Ian McKellen or Michael Fassbender, who played the younger version of McKellen’s take on the character. Olsen responded:
“I’m gonna go with Sir Ian McKellen. I had the biggest crush on him. He’s in these videos called Playing Shakespeare where actors get together and they do a Shakespeare… It’s a video series. He’s like the sexiest man in the world. So I would say Sir Ian McKellen.”
Ian McKellen then shared the video on Facebook, responding to Elizabeth Olsen’s comments in his post. Apparently giving the Scarlet Witch actress his seal of approval, McKellen said:
“If I had a daughter, I’d hope she’d be like Elizabeth. A treat to be her Daddy!”
Ian McKellen’s positive response to Elizabeth Olsen’s comments might offer some hope to fans who would like to see him reprise his X-Men role. At the very least, it sounds like he would be open to a return if Marvel Studios ever considered the idea. They recently brought back his co-star Patrick Stewart as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so there could be hope for McKellen’s Magneto getting another outing.
Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch can currently be seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the latest release from Marvel Studios. Here’s the official synopsis:
