In August 2016, five months before their divorce was officially finalized, Depp and Heard reached a divorce settlement in which Heard was awarded $7 million.

Depp and Heard said in a joint statement to the Associated Press, “Our relationship was passionate and volatile at times, but it was always based on love. For the sake of financial gain, neither party has made false accusations. There was never any intention of harming anyone physically or emotionally.”

In March 2019, Depp filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard for an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018, which was published in 2018, about being a domestic violence survivor.

2020

Depp sued News Group Newspapers, the publisher of The Sun, for libel over an entertainment article in which the actor was referred to as a “wife beater” in the headline. The case went to trial in England, and Heard was called to testify.

According to the BBC, she claimed Depp “threatened to kill” her “many times.” According to the Associated Press, Depp lost the case in November 2020 after a judge ruled that the defendants had shown “what they published in the meaning which I have held the words to bear was substantially true.” Depp’s appeal was denied, but he insists that he was not violent toward Heard.

On April 12, Depp’s defamation case was filed in Fairfax, Virginia. The case is still ongoing, and the public is keeping a close eye on it.
