Although Johnny Depp‘s life is currently focused on the lawsuit against his ex-wife Ambear Heard for defamation, it is worth remembering one of the most important episodes in the actor’s love life, his intense romance with Winona Ryder.

Depp, 58, already had a significant love history before meeting Ryder. As an actor who gained notoriety for his roles on TV as 21 Jump Street or in film with Cry-Baby, Johnny had already married and divorced Lori Anne Allison and later became engaged to actresses Sherilyn Fenn and Jennifer Grey.

Depp and Ryder fell in love at first glance

In 1989 Depp and Ryder saw each other for the first time during the premiere of the movie Great Balls of Fire! and the crush was mutual, although they didn’t meet until later through mutual friends, which was the beginning of an intense romance.

After a few months and Ryder’s family accepting Depp, the two moved in together between New York and later in Beverly Hills, becoming one of Hollywood’s favorite couples, even more so when they starred in the cult direct Tim Burton film ‘Edward Scissorhands.’

“There’s been nothing during my 27 years that compares to the feeling I have with Winona. It’s like this weird bound atom, or something. You can think something is real, but it’s different when you feel it,” Depp told Rolling Stone.

The beginning of the end between Depp and Ryder

Although Depp even got the iconic phrase “Winona Forever” tattooed on his arm, three years into their relationship in 1993, the couple split due to various reasons, including Winona’s juventus and the media coverage they suffered.

“It’s very difficult to have a personal life in this city. In my relationship with Winona it was my mistake to be as open as we were. I thought if we were honest we would destroy the curiosity monster. Instead, we fed it. We gave people permission to feel like they were part of it,” Depp told the Los Angeles Times.

After the relationship ended, Ryder fell into depression and went through life-threatening episodes of smoking and drinking, such as when she fell asleep with a lit cigarette in a hotel room, causing her to set herself on fire in the hotel room.

Depp also lived a dark period in his life, but later began a relationship with model Kate Moss, which does not seem to have been the best of times for the actor, according to his partner in different films, director Tim Burton.

“It’s not the same as with Winona. I felt weird being around him, like he wasn’t Johnny anymore. It’s almost as if Winona has taken his soul, his love,” Burton said about Depp’s relationship with Kate Moss.
