Just one week after Jujutsu Kaisen 0 premiered in theatres outside Japan, the anime movie has grossed more than $150 million at the global box office.

For film critics and fans who were not familiar with the Jujutsu Kaisen series or anime in general, the success of the prequel movie would have taken many by surprise.

However, for those of us who adored season 1 of the TV series, the anime community understood all too well just how successful the film could become.

Yet, one week after the international premiere of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, fans around the world are delighted to hear the film has now grossed more than $150 million at the global box office.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 rocks the global box office

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 premiered in Japanese theatres on Christmas Eve last year and opened to an astonishing reception from fans domestically.

Over 15,000 people watched the earliest midnight screenings of the movie, which earned ¥2.694 billion ($23.5 million) in its first three days at the Japanese box office.

In fact, upon the end of the film’s theatrical run in Japan, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 had become the highest-grossing Japanese movie of 2021, surpassing the equally-brilliant Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.

Incredibly, the movie is now considered as the 20th highest-grossing film in Japanese box office history, behind the likes of Your Name, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke and of course, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train.

On March 19th, 2022, the anime prequel movie finally arrived in theatres in Europe and North America, with the global audience obviously chomping at the bit to see the film on the big screen.

In both the UK and North America, the movie would experience an extraordinary opening weekend, only lagging slightly behind Robert Patterson’s The Batman in terms of income generated.

By March 25th, one week after the global theatrical debut, The Numbers reports that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has earned over $150 million at the global box office; $18 million domestically and $132 million internationally.

“There are some nice shake-ups in this weekend’s box office charts, led by the very strong debut of anime tie-in/manga adaptation Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie. It opened in second place with $14.8 million, a little less than half of what The Batman made in its third week ($36 million, for a total of $300 million), but that’s a big-budget American superhero movie, not an imported anime feature.” – Sam Barsanti, via AV Club.

Exceptional ratings to back up the earnings

Whilst Jujutsu Kaisen 0 continues to rake in the cash at theatres around the world, the movie is also maintaining its exceptional user ratings.

As of March 25th, the movie is scoring an incredible 8.3/10 on IMDB, 8.55/10 on MyAnimeList, with a 97% Tomatometer and 99% average audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film is also being rated at 72% and 7.7/10 by Metacritic’s critical scores and user reviews respectively. Critic reviews have also been beaming for Jujutsu Kaisen 0, with almost all breakdowns singing the films’ praises. A 9/10 rating featured on IGN’s review, with a 4/5 from both The Guardian and Comic Book.

We also gave the movie a 9/10 score in our early review, find the full article here.

“That was no Christmas miracle. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 earns its success by doing something many prequels fail at: It tells a satisfying standalone story that connects to the main series and enhances its story, while also welcoming newcomers to the franchise.” – Polygon.

Season 2 of the anime set for 2023 return

With the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 proving to be so successful, not only in Japan but around the world too, fans are understandably desperate for the TV series to resume.

The good news is that season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen will premiere in 2023, as confirmed at the Jump Festa event in February.

There had been some confusion online about whether the series would return as part of the Winter broadcasting slate, i.e., January 2023, after the Weekly Shonen Jump News Twitter page made an error in their original post.

However, this information was quickly amended, with the most likely scenario being that Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 will debut in either April or July 2023.
