Man who attacked Dave Chappelle charged with attempted murder
The man who allegedly stabbed comedian Dave Chappelle at the Hollywood Bowl in December has been charged with attempted murder.
The district attorney’s office announced Thursday that Isaiah Lee, 24, faces one count of attempted murder.
According to the DA’s office, the publicity surrounding the attack on Chappelle assisted the stabbing victim in identifying his alleged attacker.
Lee is accused of stabbing his roommate during a fight at a transitional housing apartment on December 2, 2021, according to officials.
Lee is also identified as the man who stormed the stage at the Hollywood Bowl on May 3 and tackled Chappelle while he was performing.
Earlier this month, the district attorney’s office referred the on-stage attack to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office as a misdemeanor rather than a felony.
“The publicity generated by the attack on Mr. Chappelle helped police solve this crime,” said District Attorney George Gascn in a statement Thursday. “The incident that occurred at the Hollywood Bowl was misdemeanor conduct and rightfully referred to the City Attorney’s Office. Based on the nature and severity of the December attack, Mr. Lee is now facing felony charges which my office will prosecute.”
Lee has pleaded not guilty to the stabbing charge and is due back in court on June 2.
