The first Monday in May is fast approaching, which means we’re days away from the 2022 Met Gala – the biggest fashion event on the celebrity red carpet calendar.

After two years of pandemic-related disruptions, with the 2020 event cancelled and 2021’s Gala moved from May to September, it’s time to get back to regular programming and according to all reports the Met Gala 2022 is set to be better than ever.

Here’s everything we know about the fashion world’s ‘biggest night out’…

When is the 2022 Met Gala?

Traditionally, the event takes place on the first Monday in May – that’s Monday May 2, 2022. Here in Australia, we will see the red carpet action kick off Tuesday morning (May 3). You’ll be able to catch all the best looks right here, so stay close to 9Honey.

Feel like the 2021 Met Gala was only yesterday? Due to COVID, last year’s event celebrating ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ was postponed from the first Monday in May to September 13 — the second Monday in September. The Gala capped off the end of New York Fashion Week that took place from September 8-12.

Where will the 2022 Met Gala be held?

Since its inception in 1948, the Met Gala has been held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, and that’s where the 2022 Met Gala will take place. The famed Met steps will take centre stage for what’s set to be another round of history-making style moments.

What is the theme for 2022?

The 2021 and 2022 Met Gala themes were announced by organisers as a two-part event. Following on from the 2021 theme (‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’), this year’s Met Gala theme is ‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion’, which will, again, celebrate American fashion but with a focus on inclusivity.

The curator in charge of the Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton said the Gala’s accompanying exhibition that will be presented across 13 of the American period rooms in the museum will reflect the evolution of American style.

“They also explore the work of individual tailors, dress-makers, and designers,” Bolton says.

“What’s exciting for me is that some of the names will be very familiar to students of fashion, like Charles James, Halston, and Oscar de la Renta, but a lot of the other names really have been forgotten, overlooked or relegated into the footnotes of fashion history. So one of the main intentions of the exhibition is to spotlight the talents and contributions of these individuals, and many of them are women.”

Who is co-chairing the event?

Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Regina King and Lin-Manuel Miranda have been crowned co-chairs for the 2022 event. Fashion designer Tom Ford, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and Vogue‘s Anna Wintour (who has chaired the event since 1995) will also continue to serve as honorary chairs.

For Lin-Manuel Miranda, this isn’t the first time he’s been asked to head up the star-studded event. Miranda was scheduled to co-chair the 2020 event, alongside Emma Stone, Meryl Streep and Louis Vuitton women’s creative director Nicolas Ghesquière, before its cancellation.

This list follows on from singer Billie Eilish, actor Timothée Chalamet, tennis champ Naomi Osaka and poet Amanda Gorman who co-chaired the event in 2021.
