Even in a modern era filled with countless streaming services and platforms, one series stood out as far and away the most watched by Americans in 2023.

“Suits,” a legal drama that streamed on both Peacock and Netflix last year, was the most-streamed series in the U.S. in 2023 at 57.7 billion minutes streamed, according to Nielsen. That marks the highest total recorded by Nielsen, surpassing “The Office,” which racked up 57.1 billion minutes streamed in 2020, the first year Nielsen released annual streaming totals.

Of the 57.7 billion minutes streamed for “Suits” in 2023, about 92% (53.1 billion) of those came in the 28 weeks it streamed on both Netflix and Peacock, as opposed to 4.6 billion views when it streamed on only Peacock. The series’ highest weekly total was 3.88 billion minutes streamed for the week of July 17-23, 2023, according to Nielsen.

“Suits,” which originally aired on USA Network from 2011 to 2019, was one of seven Netflix series to be featured among the Top 10 most streamed shows or movies of 2023. Peacock and Max each were featured twice, while Hulu, Disney+ and Paramount+ each had one series make the Top 10.

Overall, Americans streamed 21 million years’ – or about 184 billion hours – worth of content in 2023, marking a 21% increase from 17 million years’ worth in 2022, according to Nielsen.

8. Friends (25.0, Max)

9. Heartland (22.8, Netflix/Peacock/Hulu)

10. Supernatural (22.8, Netflix)

In addition, the most streamed original series of 2023 was Ted Lasso at 16.9 billion minutes viewed on Apple TV+, and the most streamed movie was Moana at 11.6 billion minutes on Disney+.
