Ready to take a trip back to the 70s? Amazon Prime video’s adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel, Daisy Jones and the Six, follows the rise and fall of the fictional band, The Six who is inspired by Fleetwood Mac, and the titular character, Daisy Jones, who is somewhat influenced by the real-life Stevie Nicks.

The novel, which was released in March 2019, was loved by Oscar Winning actress Reese Witherspoon who chose it for one of her Reese’s Book Club Picks. Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company even teamed up with Amazon Prime Video to create a limited series of the novel’s name before it appeared on bookshop shelves.

“As soon as I started reading Daisy Jones & The Six, I immediately fell head over heels in love with it, and I’m thrilled to be bringing it to the screen with Amazon and Jen Salke, whose passionate pursuit of the material spoke volumes,” Witherspoon said in a statement in July 2018. 

“With [Scott] Neustadter and [Michael H.] Weber, two writers I deeply admire, stewarding this project, I am so confident that Daisy and her band’s journey toward finding their voice will leave just as permanent a mark with viewers around the world as it did with me.” 

Daisy Jones and the Six Release Date

The series’ first episode was released on Amazon Prime Video on March 3, 2023, with new episodes rolling out weekly every Friday until March 24, 2023.

The Official Trailer Provides a Sneak Peak of the Show

The official full trailer, which was released on 15 February, stars Riley Keough and Sam Claflin and is accompanied by one of the Six’s songs, ‘Honeycomb’, which is from the band’s only album, Aurora and is 1 of the 24 songs recorded by the cast and written exclusively for the series. The trailer reveals the love triangle between Daisy, Billy, and Billy’s wife, Camila, and shows how the band grows. 

Before this, Amazon released a teaser trailer for the series on 25 January. This trailer previews another of the Six’s songs, ‘Regret Me’, and previews the Six’s life on tour. Throughout the teaser, you can hear Billy and Daisy singing the lyrics, “You regret me and I regret you. You couldn’t handle your liquor and you can’t seem to handle the truth.”

The trailer also reveals how the series will mimic the book’s documentary style by presenting an interview with Daisy whereby she tells the camera, “I said that I would tell you everything. But how much of everything do you really wanna know?” 

How to Watch ‘Daisy Jones & The Six’

The Amazon Studios and Hello Sunshine series Daisy Jones & the Six is streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video and has 10 episodes in the first season.

Where Was Daisy Jones & The Six Filmed?

Daisy Jones & The Six was filmed in Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Hydra, Greece – the latter will make much more sense later in the season.

‘Daisy Jones and the Six’ Plot

The novel itself, set in 70’s LA, depicts the life of its titular character who becomes a lead singer of the rock band, The Six, following a spell of sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, taking drugs with groupies, and having sex with rock stars.  It adopts a documentary-style form whereby the band members give first-person accounts of their versions of The Six’s rise and fall.

Per the Amazon synopsis, the series, “[b]ased on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, […]is a limited musical-drama series detailing the rise and precipitous fall of a renowned rock band. In 1977, Daisy Jones & The Six were on top of the world.

Fronted by two charismatic lead singers—Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne —the band had risen from obscurity to fame. And then, after a sold-out show at Chicago’s Soldier Field, they called it quits. Starring as the titular Daisy Jones, is a rock royalty descendant herself, Riley Keough. Keough is the granddaughter of the rock ‘n’ roll king, Elvis Presley, and daughter of a musician, Danny Keough, and Lisa Marie Presley. So it’s no surprise that Keough was the perfect fit to play the free-spirited Daisy Jones. 

Despite revealing that she was initially nervous about the role, in an interview with Elle, Keough said, “I read the book, and I felt like, “This story is going to bring people happiness and joy. This is going to take people out of their lives for a minute.”

“It’s just a fun, fun, fun show. Of course, [Daisy]’s got addiction issues, and there’s sadness and heartbreak, but she’s also this powerful, incredible woman who doesn’t really give a shit about anything. When you play these characters, it’s liberating, especially when you’re playing a liberated woman.” 

“The scripts are so fun. The cast is awesome. It’s just going to be a real good time,” she continued. 

Following the pressure of being able to sing as Elvis Presley’s granddaughter, Keough told Vanity Fair in December 2022,  “I didn’t even know how one gets to be able to sing loud. I went to a vocal coach and I was like, they need me to belt.” Her agent suggested she try ripping out something like Lady Gaga’s “Shallow” from ‘A Star Is Born’ remake in her car to get in the mindset.

“I was like, are you out of your mind, it’s not an easy song to sing.”

“I sounded so bad that I started crying. I was like, I can’t do it, and when I can’t do something it lights a fire in me to be able to do it. I was like, I have to do it. I’m gonna go to this vocal coach, and he’s gonna teach me how to fucking belt, whatever I need to do to get this. It really became about pushing myself to do things I’ve never done before.”

Playing the band’s male lead singer, Billy Dunne,  is ‘Love, Rosie’ star, Sam Claflin who spent the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns learning how to play the guitar for the show.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in September 2020, Claflin said of the show, “It’s got everything a good TV drama requires, really.”  

“The one thing it didn’t have is an actual person that can play guitar because that’s something I did not have in my utility belt going into this. But it’s something that I, fortunately, had a bit more time to do because of where we find ourselves.” 

In December 2022, he told Vanity Fair, “I have to say, I’d never picked up a guitar before I got this part. And, you know, having read the book, it wasn’t overly clear that I was due to be playing because we took some creative freedom and slightly shifted the parts a little bit.” 

“Meaning that I was going to be playing not lead guitar, thank God, but rhythm guitar. I had to learn how to hold the guitar, and how to strum the guitar. I had the biggest journey to go with the singing as well,” he continued.

Joining Keough and Claflin is Will Harrison who plays Graham Dunne, Billy’s younger brother and the band’s guitarist, Suki Waterhouse who plays The Six’s keyboardist, Karen Sirko, and Josh Whitehouse who plays Eddie Roundtree who is thought to be based on the book’s Eddie Loving, another of \the Six’s guitarists. 

Moreover, Sebastian Chacon plays The Six’s drummer, Warren Rhodes, Camila Morrone stars as Billy’s wife, Camila Dunne, and Nabiyah Be plays Daisy’s best friend and famous disco singer, Simone Jackson. You’ll also see Timothy Olyphant as Rod Reyes, The Six’s manager, and Tom Wright as producer, Teddy Price.

Reviews of the Show

“Daisy Jones and the Six” has received mixed reactions from the public and critics. It has been criticized for failing to replicate the emotional impact of the book and for being too slick and sanitized. However, other reviewers have liked the show and have praised Riley Keough’s singing.

According to Lucy Mangan from The Guardian whilst the show’s writers, Scott Neustadter and Michael H Weber, “kept the style and glamour – everyone and everything in it looks ceaselessly gorgeous [it] failed to repeat Jenkins Reid’s great feat, which was to make you care about this group of talented, fortunate people who couldn’t keep themselves together enough to succeed for long, and who damaged an awful lot of people in the fallout.”

“The first two episodes are fun, as we track the band paying their dues in dingy clubs while Daisy hones her craft, befriends “disco pioneer” Simone Jackson (Nabiyah Be), and learns how treacherous the business can be. She has songs poached after playing them in private to unscrupulous boyfriends and is expected to aspire no higher than being a muse to men.”

The article’s author, Lucy Mangan continues: “Although the series gains more heft after Billy gets out of rehab, and more torque once Daisy arrives, Daisy Jones & the Six never properly comes to life. It’s all a little too slick and sanitary.”

Speaking of Keough and the show, Mangan claims that “not even Elvis Presley’s grandkid can save this 70s rock ‘n’ roll saga.” Yet, despite stating that she preferred the book to the series, she still sees the fun in the televised version.

Kelly Lawler from USA Today was equally disappointed by the show, labeling it as a “featherweight flop.”

She writes, “It is fleeting Fleetwood fan fiction, a far cry from capturing the true essence of the ’70s era. (And the real Fleetwood Mac had more drama in just one album cycle than the fictional Daisy Jones & The Six musters in the entire series.) “Daisy” is the most disappointing of TV endeavors: Glossy, star-studded, and completely hollow. “

However, Daniel D’Addario from Variety enjoyed the series, stating that it is “a flawed but compelling adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2019 novel of the same name” and believes that the show “[e]xcels when it lets Riley Keough sing.”
