Surprise ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Actor Breaks Silence On ‘Star Wars’ Return
Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s intense season finale wrapped up with Ewan McGregor’s famed Jedi reuniting with a familiar -and highly anticipated – face from the Star Wars prequels. Spoilers follow.
After Obi-Wan had said goodbye to Leia and, of course, “Hello there” to Luke Skywalker, the Jedi Master made his way out into the deserts of Tatooine. Just before the episode finished, Obi-Wan finally encountered his old master, whom he had been trying to contact since the series’ first episode. Qui-Gon Jinn, once again portrayed by Liam Nesson, appeared to Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan as a Force ghost and the two set out to complete Obi-Wan’s training.
Qui-Gon Jinn’s return had been teased since Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s first episode, which saw the Jedi failing to commune with his deceased master. Given Obi-Wan’s arc throughout the series, which saw his faith in the Jedi restored and the guilt he felt over Anakin’s fall to the dark side overcome, Qui-Gon’s arrival at the series’ end seemed inevitable. Now Liam Neeson has talked about bringing The Phatom Menace‘s quintessential Jedi Master out of retirement (and back from the dead).
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter about his return to the Star Wars universe, Liam Neeson touched upon the attachment he feels to the character and his working relationship with both George Lucas and Ewan McGregor:
“I certainly didn’t want anyone else playing Qui-Gon Jinn, and I wanted to show my respect for George [Lucas] and that mythical world that he created. Plus, Ewan [McGregor] is a pal, and I loved working with him during The Phantom Menace 25 years ago.”
While Liam Neeson’s cameo as Qui-Gon Jinn was brief, it was a powerful moment on which to end this season of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Rumors of a second season abound, though nothing has been confirmed as of yet. If, however, a second season were to go ahead, it looks like Qui-Gon could be set for a more substantial role.
Here is the synopsis for Obi-Wan Kenobi:
During the reign of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi embarks on a crucial mission. Kenobi must confront allies turned enemies and face the wrath of the Empire.
Directed by Deborah Chow from Joby Harold’s scripts, the series stars Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie. The series will also see the return of legendary Star Wars composer John Williams, who scored a theme.
