Three actors who refused their Oscars – from meat party rant to Hollywood feud
In the history of the Oscars, only three winners have refused to take home their prizes for their outstanding performances.
Every actor’s dream and the highlight of their careers is to win an Oscar. According to Statista, Katharine Hepburn is the most successful figure to date in the Academy Awards’ history as she has bagged four Oscars throughout her acting career.
The 1st Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, took place on May 16, 1929, at The Hollywood Roosevelt in Los Angeles, California. Fast forward to the 93 Academy Awards, the Oscars have become one of the most prestigious events in Hollywood.
However, some have not hesitated to decline their prizes.
Dudley Nichols
1935 Oscar for Best Screenplay
As a screenwriter, Dudley was nominated for and won the category of Best Screenplay for The Informer. Instead of accepting his prize, he caused the first-ever controversial move at the Academy Awards.
Dudley Nichols became the first person to decline an Oscar. The reason for his refusal was because of a Hollywood feud and dispute that revolved around the Screen Writers’ Guild.
Back then, the Oscars were not televised, therefore, Dudley could not publicly share his distress. Nevertheless, even though the Academy sent his trophy twice, he sent it back.
Years later he became the president of the Screen Writers Guild. Once the feud was settled, according to Ozy, Dudley accepted his Oscar award in 1938.
George C. Scott
1971 Oscar for Best Actor
After being nominated twice for the categories of Best Supporting Actor for ‘The Hustler’ in 1962 and Best Actor for “Patton” in 1971.
He previously described the Oscars as “a two-hour meat parade, a public display with contrived suspense for economic reasons.” Furthermore, George seemed to be against the Academy Award.
In 1971, he accepted his trophy, or so the audience believed, as it was allegedly returned to the Academy the very next day, as told by The Entertainment.
Marlon Brando
1973 Oscar for Best Actor
Once Marlon Brando was announced as the winner of Best Actor for “The Godfather”, Sacheen Littlefeather, a Native American, was sent on his behalf to refuse the Oscar.
As History reported, Marlon became an active member of the American Indian Movement and decided to refuse the award as he was protesting the Native American image which had been disrespected in the film industry.
Sacheen’s speech was applauded and booed at the same time by the audience.
