In the original, Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell trained as a pilot to take on the enemy in epic dogfights. Feeling the need, the need for a sequel, Cruise, 59, is back and, this time, Maverick trains pilots . . .

You get the idea — cinematic Ibuprofen to blitz worries, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Nobody knows big movies like him. In the 1980s and 1990s he did Beverly Hills Cop, Bad Boys, The Rock, Con Air and Armageddon, hits that defined Hollywood as brash, fun and deliberately vacuous. Now, 36
