Where Charlie and the Chocolate Factory kids are now
ROALD Dahl fans rejoiced in 2005 when a blockbuster remake of his 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory hit cinemas.
The movie, directed by Tim Burton, received critical acclaim and a box office success – with some commenting it was more faithful to the original story than the 1971 Gene Wilder film.
In recent weeks the movie broke into Netflix’s top 10 most popular films in the US – in the wake of lead actor Johnny Depp’s defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard.
So what happened to the child stars who brought the classic tale to life? Here we take a look at what they’re up to now.
Freddie Highmore
Freddie Highmore played lucky golden ticket winner Charlie Bucket in the 2005 adaptation when he was just 12 years old.
The London-born actor, now 30, had a thriving career before landing the sweet role, previously starring in Finding Neverland and Five Children and It.
Freddie’s mum Sue Latimer is a talent agent whose clients include Daniel Radcliffe and Imelda Staunton.
His dad is former actor Edward Highmore, who appeared in Doctor Who and the 1980s BBC drama Howard’s Way.
Child star Freddie went on to appear in a range of blockbuster movies including Ridley Scott’s A Good Year, The Golden Compass, Spiderwick Chronicles and Astro Boy.
He has also enjoyed a successful TV career, starring as serial killer Norman Bates in the psychological horror TV series Bates Motel, and as Shaun Murphy in ABC medical drama The Good Doctor.
Freddie previously dated actresses Dakota Fanning, Abigail Breslin and Sarah Bolger, but revealed he’d secretly got married in 2021 during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
It’s believed his wife is fellow Brit Klarissa Munz, whom he allegedly met at Cambridge University – where Freddie studied Spanish and Arabic.
Julia Winter
Julia Winter, 29, who played bratty rich girl Veruca Salt, attended a London theatre school part-time before being plucked from obscurity for the role.
Born in Stockholm, Sweden but raised in the UK, she has pretty much ditched the limelight bar appearing on an episode of Dick and Dom in da Bungalow in 2006, and trained to become a doctor.
In 2014 fans were excited to see her name listed among the cast of Dolphin Tale 2 on IMDB, but it turned out to be a mistake.
Julia, who is fluent in both Swedish and English, is allegedly still close friends with AnnaSophia Robb, who played Violet Beauregard.
Jordan Fry
American actor Jordan, now 28, had his breakout role in the 2005 film as telly fanatic Mike Teavee.
He went on to star in a number of movies, voicing main character Lewis in Disney’s Meet the Robinsons, and appeared alongside Amanda Seyfried in Gone.
Most recently it was announced Jordan, who lives in California, will star alongside Jonathan Rhy Meyers in upcoming movie Byrd And The Bees.
Jordan keeps his fans updated with regular snaps on his Instagram account.
Philip Wiegratz
Augustus Gloop actor Philip Wiegratz has had a major glow-up since starring as the gluttonous lad.
The German star – who wore a fat suit in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – went on to appear in several movies and TV series in his homeland, but has since turned his back on acting.
The 29-year-old is now a software development engineer, and according to his social media, appears to enjoy the great outdoors and competing in survival challenges akin to Tough Mudder.
AnnaSophia Robb
Bubble-blowing Violet Beauregarde was played by American actress AnnaSophia Robb, 28, who has since gone on to have a very successful career, bagging a number of high profile roles.
She got her start in TV as Samantha in Samantha: An American Girl Holiday, and made her feature film debut in Because of Winn-Dixie, shortly before Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
AnnaSophia won two Young Artist Awards for her turn as Leslie Burke in Bridge to Terabithia.
She recently won praise for her portrayal of young Carrie Bradshaw in the Sex in the City prequel The Carrie Diaries.
Last year AnnaSophia popped up in Ed Sheeran’s music video for his track Shivers.
In September the starlet announced her engagement to boyfriend Trevor Paul on Instagram. She previously said she likes to keep her dating life out of the limelight.
