Why would it be risky for Amber Heard to call Johnny Depp back to the stand?
Sources close to Amber Heard told The Post that the actress’ legal team plans to have Johnny Depp testify again in the couple’s trial.
However, legal experts say that when the Hollywood star testified on the stand for four days, his image was strengthened, as his statements were credible and even pleasant for the jury.
So giving her a second round on the stand could hurt Heard’s case.
Heard’s risky strategy
“There is a risk that he will have more time being sympathetic on the stand when it’s really Amber Heard’s time to present her case. Most of the time, when you cross-examine, you sound hostile. A juror might think, ‘Okay, he’s back on the stand. Is he being harassed again?” said civil attorney Katherine Lizardo.
For his part, Seattle defamation lawyer Bruce Johnson, Bruce Johnson, agreed that giving Depp another chance to show his sympathetic side could backfire on his ex-wife’s interests.
“That’s a big risk – if he’s a good witness and he’s going to act nice again. Plus, you’re doing a performance for a jury and you don’t want to drag it out too long,” the expert told The Post.
Depp’s captivating personality
In this regard, Halim Dhanidina, a criminal defense attorney and former California judge, emphasized that Johnny Depp’s personality works in favor of the arguments he makes as it makes them seem credible.
“He didn’t strike me as someone who was acting or making it up. So, if he’s been landing with the jury and if the jury is liking him, then more time in front of the jury is a good thing for him,” Dhanidina said.
Under these premises, the onus will be on her lawyers to talk some sense into Amber Heard, who must lay out for her the consequences that could arise if she gives her ex-husband a chance to show off in front of the jury again.
