Woman’s TV property show nightmare as she gets window measurements wrong while renovating Welsh home by herself
A woman had an absolute nightmare renovating a home when she got the measurements of the windows wrong.
Care worker Natasha Walker had been tasked with upgrading the semi-detached in Wrexham as part new Channel 4 property programme The Great House Giveaway. The show sees two strangers who have never owned a home buy a property at auction – and have a set budget to transform it into a liveable abode to be resold in just six months. If the pair are successful, they then get to split any profit made – if not the house goes back to auction.
The show hosted by Simon Davies saw strangers Natasha and Gwion paired together for the fourth episode of series three, but just three weeks in to the renovations electrician Gwion dropped out of the project leaving 23-year-old Natasha to go it alone.

The episode was focussed around Wrexham – a place where Natasha said the housing market is particularly difficult for first time buyers.
Simon said that the average house price is roughly £160,000 in the area that is best known now for Wrexham Football Club – which is owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
After leaving home aged 16, Natasha rented for a while but now lives at her partner’s family farm in north Wales. She said: “The average house price in this area is £300,000-£350,000, we don’t have the budget to buy anything here, but if I come away with a deposit I will definitely invest it in a property in the area.”
The episode saw Simon buy a two-bed end of terrace house in Chirk. He then set a budget of £15,000 to renovate the property in just six months. Despite the property looking like it was stuck in a 1970s timewarp, Simon insisted it had “bags of potential”.
To maximise profit, host Simon suggested splitting the large upstairs bedroom to create a bathroom and bedroom and to turn the existing bathroom in to a bedroom. The windows were single paned and needed updating. However, Natasha made a hash of this task – and out of five windows she only managed to measure one correctly. However, armed with spacers, all was not lost and the problem with the windows were eventually fixed.
And the finished result ended up with a modernised home now complete with three good sized bedrooms, an upstairs bathroom as well as new electrics and a updated gas boiler. Although it’s worth mentioning that Natasha still went over budget by more than £2,000 – with the total cost coming in at £17,779.
Despite this mishap, Natasha said she was okay with the extra costs – saying the rewiring and getting the home properly hooked up to the gas mains correctly needed to be done.
Natasha, whose TV partner Gwion quit three weeks into the project, said she also felt proud of the finished product. She smiled: “Initially I was really worried as I came in to this with no trade skills. It’s quite daunting.” And when asked how she found the experience, the 23-year-old added: “Hard. Naively I thought this would be fun. If I knew what I know now I don’t think I would have taken it on.”
And the final result was a good one – she had an offer of £170,000 accepted for the house – giving her a tidy profit of £13,206 she could invest into her own home. She said: “House prices in this area felt so out of reach for such a long time but adding this to what we’ve got have brought it back to us and it’ll be so nice to start looking for ourselves now.”
